Canadiens beat Devils 4-3 in OT

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – Alex Galchenyuk scored on a power play at 2:54 of overtime and Montreal rallied from a two-goal third-period deficit to beat New Jersey.

Max Pacioretty scored twice in the final 11:23 of regulation to tie the game and Alexander Radulov added a goal for the Canadiens, who won consecutive games for the first time since early January. Al Montoya had 34 saves for Montreal.

Kyle Palmieri, John Moore and Travis Zajac scored for the Devils, who have lost four straight games (0-2-2), the past two in overtime. Cory Schneider made 29 saves.

Raptors beat Knicks 92-91

NEW YORK (AP) – DeMar DeRozan made a turnaround jumper with 1.9 seconds remaining, finishing with 37 points and leading Toronto over New York.

The Raptors won their fourth in a row, doing it with DeRozan and defense after learning earlier in the day that All-Star Kyle Lowry will have right wrist surgery that could sideline him the rest of the regular season.

Carmelo Anthony scored 24 points for the Knicks but finished a 9-for-26 night when he missed a long jumper as time expired.

Newcomers Serge Ibaka and P.J. Tucker were on the floor down the stretch as the Raptors clawed back from a 17-point first-half deficit. Ibaka finished with 15 points.

Undermanned Senators sweep Devils, Anderson makes 29 saves

By TOM CANAVAN
Assocuated Press

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The Ottawa Senators were without three top forwards Tuesday night, so they had to make up for it with defense and goaltending.

Craig Anderson made 29 saves and the Senators beat the New Jersey Devils 2-1 on Tuesday night to stay within two points of Montreal in the race for first place in the Atlantic Division.

Ottawa was without Mark Stone (22 goals), Mike Hoffman (19 goals) and Bobby Ryan (12 goals) after all three were injured over the weekend. Ryan will miss 4-to-6 weeks with a broken finger, while Stone (neck) and Hoffman (groin) are day to day.

"I think it's just our character that we stuck to the structure, everyone was on the same page," Anderson said. "It doesn't take talent to play defense and play your position. Usually the talented guys are your offensive minded, and gifted skilled guys. As far as the guys we have in our lineup right now, there's still some skill there, but it starts with structure and taking care of the puck and frustrating the other team."

The Senators have done that to the Devils all season. In sweeping their three-game series, Ottawa held New Jersey to two goals.

"Everybody stepped up; guys were just playing simple but making important plays that may not look like big plays at the time but we kept them from gaining momentum," said Kyle Turris, who scored for Ottawa along with defenseman Erik Karlsson.

Turris played a game-high 26:09, while center Derick Brassard logged 20:06.

"Sometimes when you lose people that play a lot of minutes you know someone else is going to have to fill that spot," Karlsson said. "I think tonight, we really embraced it and everyone here wanted to do that job."

Travis Zajac scored for New Jersey and Cory Schneider made 21 saves. The Devils have lost two in a row, three of four and are six points out of a playoff spot.

"We're not in the best spot, but we have to keep finding a way to win games and compete and keep ourselves relevant in the race," Schneider said. "Again, it is going to take a lot now, but we can't stop."

Turris gave the Senators the lead 59 seconds into the second period after the Devils twice failed to get the puck out of their own end. The center fired the puck behind the New Jersey goal line, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau retrieved it and found Ryan Dzingel in the left circle. He sent a cross-ice pass to Turris for a shot into an open net for his 20th goal.

Karlsson has points in six straight games after stretching the lead to 2-0 early in the third period with a power-play goal from the left circle. He beat a screened Schneider over the shoulder.

With Tom Pyatt off for delay of game, Zajac got the Devils within a goal, putting a rebound of Joseph Blandisi's shot into an open net at 6:37.

Anderson, whose wife Nicolle is battling throat cancer, was outstanding in the first two periods. He stopped deflections by Adam Henrique and Jacob Josefson in the first period and shots in close in each of the first two periods by Mike Cammalleri, who returned to the lineup after being benched for two games.

He stopped a deflection by Zajac in close in the final minute.

NOTES: The Devils activated D Kyle Quincey (upper body) off injured reserve after he missed six games. D John Moore was a healthy scratch. ... The Senators called up Fs Max McCormick and Casey Bailey from Binghamton (AHL) to replace Hoffman and Stone. ... New Jersey F Beau Bennett was a healthy scratch. ... Devils F Pavel Zacha did not return for the third period with an upper-body injury.

Islanders open 9-game road trip with 3-1 win over Red Wings

By LARRY LAGE
Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — The New York Islanders need to turn around their lackluster rate of success on the road to rally into the NHL playoffs. At the start of a nine-game road trip, they skated in the right direction.

Calvin de Haan was credited with a go-ahead goal that caromed off an opponent late in the second period and the Islanders went on to beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 Tuesday night.

The Islanders, in contention for a wild-card spot, started the day tied with Dallas for the fewest points on the road with a 7-18-4 record.

"It's huge to win this game," said New York coach Doug Weight acknowledged. "We got two tough tests coming. We got Montreal and Columbus. It doesn't get easy. Detroit just won two in a row against the best two teams in the league."

The Red Wings, coming off wins at Pittsburgh and against Washington, went into their bye week with the expectation the franchise will try to trade players because it has a slim chance of extending a playoff streak to 26.

"We know it's going to be tough one, but we still believe in here at least," Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg said.

De Haan's shot from above the left circle was stopped by Petr Mrazek, but the rebound went off Detroit defenseman Xavier Ouellet and the back of the goaltender's left leg and into the net. John Tavares scored early in the third period to give the Islanders a two-goal lead and they coasted to the victory.

New York's Josh Bailey had a goal and an assist, matching his career high of 41 points set two years ago. Thomas Greiss stopped 26 shots.

Henrik Zetterberg scored for Detroit and Mrazek finished with 19 saves.

Mrazek made a mistake late in the first period and New York took advantage. He played the puck from behind the net, passing it to his left right onto Bailey's stick to set up the game's first goal.

"Obviously, there's a lot of luck involved there," Bailey said. "I was staying on the wall hoping that he would throw it down the middle and I could get to it, but he fanned on it a little and that's how I got it. We were laughing on the bench because I had to wait for Anders (Lee) to get out of my way so that I could shoot.

The Red Wings tied it with one-tenth of a second left in the first on Zetterberg's goal on the power play for the NHL's worst team with an extra skater off a faceoff with 3.2 seconds left. Detroit's Fran Nielsen won the draw against Tavares, a former teammate, and Thomas Vanek pushed the puck to his right to assist Zetterberg on the tying goal.

Tavares, who was stopped by a spectacular, sprawling save in the second period, scored in the third period just to the left of the right circle off a slick pass from Bailey as he skated into the left circle.

"This is the solid start we needed for the road trip," Tavares said. "We know that we've got to climb the ladder during this trip, and we also need to put some space between us and the teams behind us."

NOTES: New York F Cal Clutterbuck returned after a nine-game absence because of a lower-body injury and was unable to finish the game because he aggravated his ailment. "It's precautionary," Weight insisted. ... Islanders C Casey Cizikas skated off the ice and went to his team's dressing room after appearing to injure his left hand and didn't return. Weight said Cizikas would be evaluated Wednesday. ... New York D Travis Hamonic (lower body) is nearing his return after being out for more than a month. ... Detroit G Jimmy Howard, who has been out for nearly two months with a knee injury, said he does not know when he will be cleared to make another rehab appearance for the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. ... Detroit's backup goalie, Jared Coreau, is expected to play for the Griffins this week. ... Weight, who is from Michigan, said he skated with the team during the morning skate because it was his last scheduled visit to Joe Louis Arena, which will be replaced by a new arena next season.

Byron lifts Canadiens past Rangers in shootout

By SIMMI BUTTAR
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Paul Byron scored in the fifth round of the shootout and Montreal beat the New York Rangers 3-2 on Tuesday night to give coach Claude Julien his first win in his second stint with the Canadiens.

Carey Price made 28 saves for Montreal. Price stopped Kevin Hayes and J.T. Miller twice in the OT, including a diving save in the closing seconds of the extra period.

Shea Weber had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens. Andrew Shaw also scored for Montreal.

The Rangers' Mats Zuccarello opened the shootout with a goal and Montreal's Alexander Radulov tied it in the third round.

Rick Nash and Oscar Lindberg scored in regulation for the Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist made 26 saves as New York snapped its five-game home win streak.

Lundqvist stopped Max Pacioretty halfway through overtime and Montreal's Tomas Plekanec also hit the post late in the period.

Tied 1-1 after the first period, the Canadiens took advantage of a penalty to Nick Holden to take the lead. Weber took a pass from Andrei Markov and one-timed a blast past Lundqvist for his 14th of the season at 1:42.

Price then preserved the lead when he made a nice right pad save on Nash's breakaway attempt a couple of minutes later.

However, Nash got the better of Price halfway through the second period. Ryan McDonagh made the pass to spring Nash on the breakaway and he beat Price with a wrister for his 17th at 9:26.

Lundqvist then made a glove save on Byron's shot less than a minute later before Brendan Gallagher crashed into him and drew an interference penalty.

Weber helped the Canadiens open the scoring early in the first period. He shot wide from the right point. Shaw got the puck behind the net and beat Lundqvist with a wraparound at 3:55 for his eighth.

The Rangers answered halfway through the period. Jesper Fast took a pass from Lindberg at his own blue line and skated into the Canadiens zone along the right wall. Fast then centered a pass while sliding to the ice and Lindberg, who skated hard all the way toward the net, deflected the puck past Price for his third at 10:03.

NOTES: Julien won 72 games in his first stint with the Canadiens from 2002-03 through 2005-06. ... The Canadiens acquired D Keegan Lowe in a trade from Carolina for Philip Samuelsson. Lowe, the son of Kevin Lowe who won six Stanley Cups in his career, was the 73rd overall pick in the 2011 draft, and played two games with the Hurricanes in 2014-15. The 23-year-old prospect will report to the St. John's IceCaps of the American Hockey League. Samuelsson is the son of Ulf Samuelsson, who is the head coach of the Hurricanes' AHL affiliate in Charlotte. The younger Samuelsson has appeared in 13 career NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Arizona Coyotes.

Sabres snap Blues' 6-game winning streak with 3-2 win

By JOHN WAWROW
AP Hockey Writer

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Robin Lehner and the Buffalo Sabres have been on a roll since the goalie questioned his teammates' commitment a week ago.

Lehner stopped 16 shots in the third period and 37 overall, and the Sabres snapped the St. Louis Blues' six-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory on Saturday.

Evander Kane and Nicholas Baptiste each had a goal and an assist in Buffalo's third straight win, matching a season best accomplished three times. Ryan O'Reilly also scored during a two-man advantage with 32 seconds left in the second period.

Now that's more like it, Lehner said.

"I don't think it's about spark. As I said before, it's the small, minor details that's been hurting us," he said. "It's not been many times this year where I felt we could complain about our effort. Slowly but surely, we're starting to put it together."

Lehner had a far different reaction following a 4-2 loss to Vancouver on Feb. 12. He challenged his teammates to look themselves in the mirror, and said coaches and fans deserved better.

The Sabres responded by rallying for a 3-2 win at Ottawa on Tuesday. They followed the victory against the Senators with a 2-0 win over Colorado on Thursday.

On Saturday, Buffalo scored three straight times after yielding the opening goal to Vladimir Tarasenko early in the first, and then hung on after Scottie Upshall scored on a short-handed breakaway with 4:57 remaining.

Penalties cost the Blues, who dropped to 7-2 since Mike Yeo replaced Ken Hitchcock as coach.

With St. Louis playing its third game in four days, Yeo said fatigue was a factor in why his team was penalized six times versus Buffalo's three.

"I thought for the first time in a while we were reaching a lot more as opposed to moving our feet," Yeo said. "And when you do that, you get caught out of position. That's when you reach. That's when you take penalties."

O'Reilly's goal came with Kenny Agostino in the box for cross-checking Jack Eichel from behind, and 26 seconds after Upshall was penalized for hooking O'Reilly.

Playing give-and-go with Rasmus Ristolainen, O'Reilly worked his way into the right circle where he spun and beat Jake Allen inside the far post.

It was the first power-play goal allowed by the Blues in 25 chances. The streak had spanned eight-plus games.

Allen made 25 saves.

Kane scored the go-ahead goal at 11:58 when he parked in front and deflected Zach Bogosian's shot from just inside the blue line.

The Sabres beat the Blues for the first time since Dec. 27, 2009, stopping an 0-8-1 drought. It was Buffalo's third win in 24 games against St. Louis dating to the start of the 1998-99 season.

Buffalo improved to 26-23-10, marking the first time the team had three more wins than losses since closing the 2011-12 season with a 39-32-11 record.

Coach Dan Bylsma credited Lehner for the team's turnaround, which followed a mediocre nine-game stretch.

"We've been a team that's been up and down and win one, lose one. And not any of us have been happy with that kind of result with our play, and Robin was one of those guys," Bylsma said. "I think he's stepped up with his play in the last six, seven games."

Lehner's best save came 20 seconds into the second when he kicked out his pad to stop Jori Lehtera.

The start of the game was delayed by about five minutes because of poor ice conditions. Referee Dean Morton announced just as players lined up for the opening faceoff that the rink had to be re-flooded due to the integrity of the ice.

Blues forward Kyle Brodziak said the reason for the delay was as a result of several ruts, which were smoothed during the brief resurfacing.

NOTES: Brodziak returned after missing 10 games with an injury to his right foot. ... Sabres D Cody Franson returned after missing four games with a foot injury. ... Baptiste was recalled from the minors earlier in the day to replace Sam Reinhart, who was sidelined by an illness. D Taylor Fedun was placed on waivers.

Devils edge Islanders 3-2 behind Schneider's 40 saves

By DENIS P. GORMAN
Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- For a franchise with three Stanley Cup championships and a long list of postseason appearances, the modern-day New Jersey Devils find themselves having to learn the lessons their predecessors knew by rote.

Games such as Saturday night's 3-2 win over the New York Islanders could go a long way toward shaping the organization's future.

Just ask head coach John Hynes.

"It was a playoff atmosphere," coach John Hynes said. "This is where you grow. This is where we're trying to grow out our team and grow our organization to get back (to the postseason), learn how to play in these games and (be) a team that can contend."

Cory Schneider made 40 saves and Travis Zajac had a short-handed goal and an assist to lead the Devils. Devante Smith-Pelley and Pavel Zacha also scored for New Jersey (25-23-10), which finished 3-2-0 on its longest homestand of the season.

"The most important thing is that we won," Smith-Pelley said.

New York dropped to 26-21-10, including 7-13-4 on the road. Andrew Ladd and Anthony Beauvillier scored for the Islanders, while Thomas Greiss made 18 saves.

Schneider stopped a penalty shot by John Tavares.

"We're going to have to win on the road if we're going to do anything," Islanders interim coach Doug Weight said.

The first of four regular-season meetings between the Metropolitan Division rivals - and the first half of a weekend home-and-home - was a matchup of teams trying to make up ground in the playoff race.

The Islanders are two points out of the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot, while New Jersey is four points back.

"The concern is you lose points," Weight said. "We're in the playoff race."

Sprung by Zajac's pass off the boards, Smith-Pelley opened the scoring at 7:10 of the first period with a backhand that beat Greiss between the legs.

"I was super relieved to contribute," Smith-Pelley said. "That goal kind of got us started."

Exactly a minute later, Schneider kept the Devils ahead with a blocker save on Tavares' penalty shot. Tavares was awarded the try when he was hooked on the arm by Zajac to thwart a semi-breakaway.

"(Tavares) likes to come in slow and pick up (a) little speed and play in tight," Schneider said. "I had to be patient and hold my ground."

Zajac's short-handed wrist shot from the left circle at 8:49 of the second doubled the Devils' lead. Tavares fell and lost the puck in the offensive end, allowing Zajac to counterattack with Adam Henrique on a 2-on-1.

Zacha added a power-play goal 6:21 into the third, but the Islanders mounted a comeback sparked by Ladd's goal at 8:58. Hynes used his coach's challenge to see if Tavares interfered with Schneider, but the ruling on the ice was upheld after a replay review.

The Islanders closed within one on Beauvillier's snap shot off the rush at 13:48.

New York outshot the Devils 42-21.

"The first 20 (minutes) wasn't great," Islanders defenseman Calvin de Haan said. "But the last 40, like I said, I thought we carried play."

NOTES: New Jersey finished 1 for 2 with the man advantage and killed off all three New York power plays. ... Before the game, the Devils acquired D Viktor Loov from Toronto for C Sergey Kalinin. New Jersey assigned the 24-year-old Loov to its AHL affiliate in Albany, New York. Loov has 42 points (11 goals, 31 assists) and 127 penalty minutes in 170 AHL games. ... The Devils scratched LW Michael Cammalleri, who has not scored a goal since Jan. 3, a stretch of 18 games. In 51 games this season, Cammalleri has 10 goals, which is tied for third on the team with Zajac. Smith-Pelley dressed in Cammalleri's place. New Jersey also scratched D Seth Helgeson. ... New York RW Cal Clutterbuck missed his eighth straight game with a lower-body injury, and Islanders D Travis Hamonic sat out his 19th consecutive game with a lower-body injury. ... The Islanders scratched C Shane Prince and C Adam Pelech. ... The game was the second half of a day-night doubleheader at Prudential Center. No. 2 Villanova routed Seton Hall 92-70 in the men's college basketball game earlier in the day. ... The announced attendance was 16,514.

Disputed 'I Love NY' highway signs cost state $8.1M

By ASSOCIATED PRESS

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York has spent $8.1 million to install hundreds of "I Love NY" highway signs that are the subject of a dispute with the federal government.

Federal and state officials are working to resolve a dispute over the legality of the signs.

Federal highway officials say the signs don't comply with federal regulations.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration argues they give an important boost to the state's tourism industry by highlighting local products and sites.

Republican Assemblyman Steve Hawley says the signs are an example of wasteful spending and that the money should have been spent on more important items.

Top state transportation leaders gave the total cost during a recent hearing on state transportation spending.

Ladd scores 2 as Islanders beat rival Rangers 4-2

By VIN A. CHERWOO
AP Sports Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- Two nights after a bad road loss, the New York Islanders bounced back with a key home win against one of their biggest rivals.

Andrew Ladd scored twice to lead the Islanders to a 4-2 victory over the Rangers on Thursday night. Anders Lee and Nikolay Kulemin also scored, and Thomas Greiss stopped 25 shots to help the Islanders improve to 8-0-2 in their last 10 at home.

"It was a huge game for us," Lee said. "A good response from our last outing."

The Islanders were coming off a 7-1 loss at Toronto on Tuesday night when they had a chance to move past the Maple Leafs into a playoff spot.

John Tavares had two assists for his 12th multipoint game of the season, helping the Islanders move back within a point of Toronto for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference.

When asked if this was the Islanders' biggest win of the season, interim coach Doug Weight didn't hesitate to agree.

"Our place in the standings would be an obvious (reason)," he said. "Crucial bounce-back. ... If you don't have a deep effort against the New York Rangers, you're not going to beat them. They're too good. They're deep. ... They've got a solid team."

The Islanders, who swept the four games between the teams a year ago, beat the Rangers for the second time in three meetings this season. The Rangers have also lost all four matchups at Barclays Center since the Islanders moved to Brooklyn before last season.

"We just had a hard time making plays in their end tonight," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "You've got to give the opposition credit, they played a good game. We seem to be having issues in this building right now."

Nick Holden and Jimmy Vesey scored for the Rangers, whose season-high six-game winning streak was snapped. Henrik Lundqvist finished with 19 saves.

Ladd had an empty-netter for his 14th with 1:10 left, and then nearly got another in the final minute when he hit a goalpost.

The Rangers went on a four-minute power play on a high-sticking double-minor on the Islanders' Josh Bailey in the closing seconds of the second period. However, the Islanders extended their lead to 3-1 with a short-handed goal at 3:03 of the third. Tavares and Kulemin were attacking in the offensive zone and had several chances in front. Tavares then got the puck behind the net and passed it to Kulemin in front, and he put it past Lundqvist for his 10th.

"It was right there, and he kept hacking and whacking and the puck was bouncing," Lundqvist said. "When it went behind (the net), I thought we had it covered. ... We didn't sort it out and it cost us."

Vesey pulled the Rangers back within one 43 seconds later - with seconds left on the power play - when he knocked in a rebound of a shot by Brady Skjei for his 14th. Weight challenged for goalie interference because the Rangers' Rick Nash fell into Greiss before Vesey knocked it in, but the goal stood after a review.

The Rangers, who lead the NHL with 19 road wins, lost for just the second time in their last 10 away from home.

Trailing 1-0 after one period, the Islanders took the lead with two goals less than 4 minutes apart in the second.

The tying score came after some slick passing as Tavares sent it from the right corner to Bailey in the right circle. Bailey then quickly sent it across the front of the crease to Lee, who settled the puck, turned and put it into the open left side of the net for his 22nd at 2:43.

Stephen Gionta then knocked the Rangers' Marc Staal off the puck behind the net and sent a pass in front to Ladd, who poked it in past Lundqvist from the right side at 6:24.

Holden got the Rangers on the scoreboard in the first period just 8 seconds after his hooking penalty expired with his ninth at 6:23 on the Rangers' first shot on goal.

NOTES: Rangers D Kevin Klein missed the game due to flu-like symptoms. He was replaced in the lineup by Adam Clendening. Vigneault also put LW Matt Puempel in place of fellow rookie Pavel Buchnevich. ... The Rangers won at home 5-3 in the teams' season opener and the Islanders won 4-2 in Brooklyn on Dec. 6. The teams conclude the season series March 22 at Madison Square Garden. ... The Islanders play 18 of their last 26 games on the road, where they are just 7-12-4. "We have a lot of road games and a crappy road record. ... We've got to get better on the road," Weight said. "We haven't played horribly, but we're not getting the results." ... Injured Islanders D Travis Hamonic and RW Cal Clutterbuck both skated Thursday morning, but neither is ready to return.

Reinhart, Kane score; Lehner perfect as Sabres beat Avs 2-0

By JONAH BRONSTEIN
Associated Press

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Evander Kane helped the Buffalo Sabres to their first winning streak in nearly a month. There's more work to do if this run is to become a playoff push, though.

"We need to go back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back," Kane said after the Sabres' 2-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.

"That's where we're at right now."

Kane and Sam Reinhart scored, Robin Lehner made 23 saves and the Sabres moved within three points of Toronto for the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot. They have won consecutive games for the first time since a three-game winning streak from Jan. 20-24.

"We didn't take our foot off the gas," Kane said.

Buffalo's ability to maintain puck possession puck benefited its defense.

"That was our best game in a while at limiting their time in the offensive zone, breaking the puck out as quick as possible, and keeping it down there," Reinhart said.

Lehner got his fifth career shutout and second of the season. In eight February games, Lehner is 4-3-1 with a 1.88 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage. This was the fewest number of shots Lehner has faced in the last 35 games he played all three periods.

"When they did break us down, Lehner was there again," Reinhart said. "Seems like a broken record at this point, but he's been there to bail us out a lot."

The Avalanche lacked energy in the fourth of a season-long five-game road trip. Colorado has lost five in a row and 11 straight on the road. This was the Avalanche's ninth shutout loss.

"We didn't create enough scoring chances to win the hockey game," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. "We didn't earn a power play. Not competitive enough early in that game."

Calvin Pickard made 30 saves.

"We haven't had a point on this whole road trip," Pickard said. "We've got to find a way to get a win."

Pickard made five saves on Buffalo's three power plays before giving up the goal to Reinhart.

"Calvin was good," Bednar said. "Their power play is dangerous at home, and he's a big reason why we had the power play stops in the first period."

Buffalo took a 1-0 lead 48 seconds into the second period when Reinhart scored on a power play. Reinhart gathered the rebound off Rasmus Ristolainen's slap shot from the point and slipped a backhand between Pickard's pads for his 13th of the season.

The Sabres have struggled in second periods this season, getting outscored 63-40 through their first 57 games.

Kane got his 19th goal of the season with 4:14 left in the third period, cutting from the right wall to the front of the net and beating Pickard with a hard wrist shot. Kane has 12 points in his last 12 games.

NOTES: Sabres C Derek Grant left the game late in the first period with a shoulder injury and did not return. ... Sabres D Cody Franson skated with the team Thursday morning and said he could return to the lineup this weekend. Franson has missed four games with a foot injury. ... Buffalo did not take a penalty. ... UFC lightweight Anthony "Rumble" Johnson was interviewed on the video scoreboard during the first intermission. Johnson is scheduled to fight champion Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 210 in Buffalo on April 8.

Sens' Condon gets 'special' shutout during father-son trip

By TOM CANAVAN
AP Sports Writer

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- The father-son trip for the Ottawa Senators turned into something special for goaltender Mike Condon.

Condon made 21 saves in recording his fifth shutout of the season, and his father, Ted, got a gift to commemorate the Senators' 3-0 win over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night.

Mike Condon said it was the first time his father has been in attendance for one of his six NHL shutouts.

"I got the puck for him, and that'll be special, and he'll have this memory for a long time," Condon said. "(I) saw the video of him cringing up in the stands during the game. Not easy for goalie dads to be out there watching their kids play, and I can't even imagine what it's like. I'm happy to give him a good result."

The tight checking game was scoreless until Dion Phaneuf scored on a power play late in the second period. The Senators didn't ice the game until the final four minutes, when Erik Karlsson scored on a point shot that crawled into the net and Kyle Turris shot into an empty net.

The win was the Senators their third in four games, and it moved them within four point of first-place Montreal in the Atlantic Division. The Canadiens also have played three more games than Ottawa.

"We're not looking at that," Karlsson said. "We need to take care of ourselves. We can't really focus on what other teams are doing. I feel we've done a good job to put ourselves in this position, and we're happy where we are, but we're here to win games."

Cory Schneider stopped 32 shots, but the Devils lost for the second time in regulation (4-2-1) in their last seven games.

New Jersey remains five points behind Toronto for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, but it has played one more game.

"I thought for the most part we did the right things in the first two periods and then in the third, they just squeezed us a little harder and we were not able to execute quite as well and get in and get some sustained shots," Schneider said. "They just outplayed us in the third, and when you are down a goal, that is not the way to go."

Phaneuf broke a scoreless tie with a rocket from the left point with 1:59 left in the second period. The puck hit the upper right corner of the net and came out quickly, leaving some players wondering whether the puck had gone in the goal. A video review upheld Phaneuf's ninth of the season and third in four games.

Karlsson made it 2-0 with a shot from the right point that Schneider slowed down but let trickle into the net.

Condon had the best saves in a scoreless first period. He stopped Beau Bennett in close six-plus minutes into the game. He denied Kyle Palmieri on a shot from the inside the right circle at 4:37 to go and seconds later stopped blast by defenseman Ben Lovejoy from between the circles.

Bennett also hit the post early in the second period.

NOTES: Senators LW Tom Pyatt, who turned 30 on Tuesday, played in his 300th NHL game. ... Bennett returned to the lineup after missing nine games (ankle). ... Condon picked up a delay of game penalty eight seconds after the opening faceoff. ... Ottawa RW Curtis Lazar was in the lineup after being a healthy scratch for four games. Chris Neil was scratched. ... Senators D Marc Methot was ill and did not play. ... Devils are 6-19-2 when trailing after two periods.

Antetokounmpo scores 33, Bucks hold off Nets 129-125

By BRIAN MAHONEY
AP Basketball Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 33 points in his final game before making his All-Star debut, Greg Monroe added 25 and the Milwaukee Bucks sent the Brooklyn Nets to the break on a 14-game skid with a 129-125 victory Wednesday night.

Khris Middleton finished with 20 points in his strongest game since returning from a ruptured left hamstring that forced him to miss the first 50 games. He made four free throws in the final 19 seconds as the Bucks won their third straight.

Monroe was 12 for 16 from the field after going 12 for 15 on Monday in a victory over Detroit. He has two straight 20-point games after just one previously this season.

Brook Lopez scored a season-high 36 points for the Nets. They have lost 16 straight at home.

The Bucks led 95-82 after a 33-point third quarter, but Spencer Dinwiddie scored 15 of his season-high 19 in the fourth and the Nets got within two a few times. But Antetokounmpo, voted to start Sunday in New Orleans, had a basket with 47 seconds to play before Middleton closed it out from the line.

"We'll talk about his minutes, we'll talk about starting, we'll talk about all that fun stuff over the break," Kidd said.

LIN CLOSE

Jeremy Lin, who hasn't played since straining his left hamstring on Dec. 26, returned to full practice Tuesday. He's expected to play Feb. 24 at Denver in the Nets' first game after the All-Star break.

"You can see his impact right off the bat and it was only an hour and 15 minute practice," coach Kenny Atkinson said. "But we felt it and that's good for all of us, all of our morale right now, our confidence that he's on the verge of coming back. And he's anxious to come back and help the team."

Westbrook scores 38 in triple-double as Thunder top Knicks

By CLIFF BRUNT
AP Sports Writer

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Russell Westbrook closed out the first half in familiar fashion - with a triple-double and a win.

Westbrook scored 38 points and posted his 27th triple-double of the season to help the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the New York Knicks 116-105 on Wednesday night.

Westbrook moved into sole possession of third place for the most triple-doubles in a season, behind Oscar Robertson's 41 in 1961-62 and Wilt Chamberlain's 31 in 1967-68. The star guard had 14 rebounds and 12 assists in the 64th triple-double of his career.

"The respect is obvious, man," Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony said. "It's a mutual respect. Russell is like family to me. I love to see him out there doing what he is doing. I hope he can continue to do that throughout the rest of the season."

Victor Oladipo scored 21 points and Jerami Grant added 13 for the Thunder, who snapped a two-game skid.

Westbrook enjoyed heading into the All-Star break on a good note.

"You want to have a good feeling, good taste in your mouth going into the break, and then make sure you come back ready to play," he said.

Anthony had 30 points for the Knicks after being selected to the All-Star Game as an injury replacement for Cleveland's Kevin Love earlier in the night. Derrick Rose scored 25 and Courtney Lee added 16.

The Knicks jumped out to a 16-2 lead and shot 73 percent in the first quarter to take a 39-27 lead. Anthony made his first seven shots and scored 19 points in the first quarter.

New York led by 17 in the second before the Thunder rallied and took a 62-60 lead at halftime. Westbrook had 19 points and 10 assists at the break.

Westbrook clinched his triple-double on a rebound with about seven minutes left in the third quarter. Oladipo's 3-pointer as time expired in the period put the Thunder ahead 88-80.

With about five minutes remaining, Westbrook caught Anthony on a pump fake before draining a 3 that put the Thunder up 105-94.

Anthony hit just four of his final 13 shots. Westbrook credited Andre Roberson for sticking with Anthony after the rough start.

"I thought he stayed with it," Westbrook said. "He made it tough for him. Carmelo's one of those guys that if he gets going, it's hard to stop him. I thought Dre never got discouraged and stayed with it the whole game."

TIP-INS

Knicks: C Joakim Noah and G Brandon Jennings sat out with injuries. Noah missed his fifth straight game with a sore left hamstring, while Jennings sat out with a sore Achilles tendon. ... Willy Hernangomez started in Noah's place and finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. ... Anthony was held to one point in the second quarter.

Thunder: G Alex Abrines was added to the Rising Stars Challenge as a replacement for injured Philadelphia big man Joel Embiid. Abrines joins Thunder forward Domantas Sabonis on the World Team. ... Thunder owner Clay Bennett presented Westbrook with his All-Star Game jersey before the opening tip.

STAT LINES

The Knicks shot 56 percent in the first half and still trailed, then dropped off to 40 percent in the second half.

STAR POWER

Former Thunder center Kendrick Perkins attended the game and got a standing ovation from the crowd. The enforcer from the team's trip to the 2012 NBA Finals visited the locker room after the game. He attended practice earlier in the day.

QUOTABLE

Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek on guarding Westbrook: "We basically showed a wall and he was throwing at other guys, and they weren't making the shots early. Then, I felt there was too much space. He got around our guys, and when he gets around and has the full head of steam it's almost like you have to follow him because he's either going to dunk it or lay it in."

Lehner makes 39 saves vs former team, Sabres beat Sens 3-2

By ASSOCIATED PRESS

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) -- Robin Lehner made 39 saves against his former team and Matt Moulson and Justin Bailey scored in the third period to rally the Buffalo Sabres past the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Lehner is 4-0-2 against the club that drafted him in the second round of the 2009 NHL draft. He was traded away with David Legwand in June 2015 to Buffalo for the 21st overall pick in that year's draft.

Ryan O'Reilly also scored for the Sabres.

Bobby Ryan ended a five-game run without a point by getting a goal and an assist for Ottawa. Dion Phaneuf also scored, and Craig Anderson made 22 saves.

After a solid start to the third period, Buffalo kept pushing and was rewarded when Bailey tipped Jake McCabe's point shot to take a 3-2 lead at 7:38.

The Sabres tied it 51 seconds into the third when Moulson picked up a puck at the side of the net and put it over Anderson's back.

Coming into the game, Buffalo had given up 62 second-period goals, third worst in the league. Tuesday night was no different as the Sabres were outshot 16-7.

Ottawa made it 63 when Phaneuf jumped on a soft rebound and put the puck past Lehner to give the Senators a 2-1 lead.

The Sabres opened the scoring on their first shot when O'Reilly used Phaneuf as a screen and beat Anderson low glove side. The Senators tied it at the 14-minute mark of the period when Ryan tipped Erik Karlsson's shot from the point.

This was the fifth and final meeting between the two teams, with Buffalo going 4-0-1.

NOTES: Ottawa wrapped its four-game homestand 2-2-0. ... Senators D Chris Wideman was a late scratch due to a lower-body injury, and RW Curtis Lazar was a healthy scratch for the fourth straight game. ... Buffalo D Zach Bogosian returned to the lineup after missing the last six games with a rib injury, but LW Evander Kane did not play due to illness and D Taylor Fedun was a healthy scratch.

Greene, Palmieri score in 2nd period as Devils beat Avs 3-2

By TOM CANAVAN
AP Sports Writer

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- While the New Jersey Devils are hanging around in the playoff race, they are not making up much ground.

Devils defenseman Andy Greene scored the go-ahead goal on a power play and Kyle Palmieri converted on an odd-man rush with Taylor Hall to lead New Jersey over the struggling Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Tuesday night.

The win was the Devils' fourth in six games (4-1-1), but they remain five points out of a postseason spot. They are almost as close to the bottom of the standings in the Eastern Conference.

"You don't want to lose two in a row ever, especially this time of year with the homestand," goaltender Cory Schneider said after making 28 saves. "If you get off to an 0-2 start out of the break, you're chasing. It was a game we needed to win and we were ready to play."

The win came just two days after the Devils were beaten at home by San Jose. It was also one New Jersey needed against the NHL's worst team.

"They're on the board every day when you come in," Palmieri said of the standings. "Everything is so close. You can't pick and choose and hypothetically go over things in your head. You just have to focus on the things that happen in this room."

Jeremy Smith stopped 37 shots in his NHL debut after seven seasons in the minor leagues. Recent waiver pickup Mark Barberio and Mikhail Grigorenko scored for Colorado, which has lost four straight and is 4-22-1 in its last 27 games.

"I thought he was fantastic; the best player by a country mile," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said of Smith, who will turn 28 in April.

The win was only the Devils' second against Colorado in 11 meetings.

Greene, who had his streak of 350 consecutive games played snapped on Jan. 6, scored his first goal since Dec. 3 with a shot from the left point. It came after Travis Zajac won a faceoff three seconds after Andreas Martinsen was penalized for hooking.

The goal at 8:55 of the second period was initially waived off because the officials thought Miles Wood interfered with Smith. The Devils challenged the call and the ruling was overturned after the replay showed the interference came after the puck was in the net.

"I thought that was a good goal all day," Bednar said.

Palmieri stretched the lead to 3-1 at 16:25 of the second period. He picked up a loose puck at center ice, sent it to Hall and then took a return pass in close for a shot into an open net.

"Some guys would kind of quit on a play after they make a pass on a 2-on-1, but Kyle followed it up to the net and that's huge," Hall said.

Grigorenko cut it to 3-2 with 1:26 left in the period. Matt Duchene stole the puck in the Devils end and found the forward between the circles for his sixth goal.

Smith, who kept Colorado in the game, gave up a goal 2:04 after the opening faceoff.

A turnover in the Avalanche end set up Jacob Josefson for a shot from the right circle. Smith knocked it down with his glove and made a stop on a rebound in close by Stefan Noesen, but had no chance on a backhand by Pavel Zacha .

"I think I played pretty well," Smith said. "A couple of things I could have done different to give myself a better chance to make saves, but I think there are a lot of good things you can take from the game."

Barberio tied it with a power-play goal at 6:43 of the second. The former Montreal Canadiens player took a great cross-ice pass from Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog for a shot into an open net.

Matthews scores twice, Maple Leafs rout Islanders 7-1

By ASSOCIATED PRESS

TORONTO (AP) -- A loss would have knocked the Toronto Maple Leafs out of playoff position. Instead, they trounced the New York Islanders and set a season high for goals.

Auston Matthews scored twice, Frederik Andersen earned his 100th NHL win and the Maple Leafs routed the Islanders 7-1 on Tuesday night in a game with major postseason implications.

Toronto won for the third time in nine games and moved three points ahead of New York for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. The Maple Leafs trail Boston and Ottawa by one point for the final two automatic playoff spots in the Atlantic Division.

"I think we came out and just played the right way - played fast, just like our slogan says," said Matthews, referring to the "Play Fast. Play Right" mantra plastered across the team's dressing room walls. "When we do the right things we're definitely a tough team to play against."

Climbing up the standings since interim coach Doug Weight replaced Jack Capuano behind the bench, New York fell to 10-4-2 in its past 16 games.

Matthews increased his rookie total to 27 goals and Andersen stopped 33 shots. Josh Leivo had a career-high three points with one goal and two assists in just under 10 minutes for Toronto.

Nazem Kadri and William Nylander each had a goal and an assist. Tyler Bozak and Matt Hunwick also scored for the Maple Leafs.

Jason Chimera scored on a penalty shot for New York. Thomas Greiss and Jean-Francois Berube combined to give up seven goals on 41 shots.

After slow starts in their previous two games (both losses), the Maple Leafs decided to change up their routine and did not hold a morning skate Tuesday.

"We just thought it was the best thing for us," coach Mike Babcock said.

The switch spurred the desired result against the Islanders, as Toronto raced out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Leivo started the scoring just past the midway point of the first period, ripping a shot from the top of the left circle past Greiss. It was the first goal of the season for the 23-year-old Leivo, who suited up for only his fifth game. He got a rare opportunity to play with rookie wing Nikita Soshnikov sidelined by injury.

Kadri added to the lead with 32 seconds left in the period, inadvertently deflecting Nikita Zaitsev's point shot into the empty cage behind Greiss. The goal was Kadri's first in the past 10 games and 21st of the season, setting a career high.

New York, which won the first two meetings between the teams this season (including 6-5 in overtime against Andersen a week earlier), had its share of decent opportunities early on, twice hitting posts on shots from Brock Nelson and Josh Bailey.

Babcock credited Andersen for stabilizing things early amid some "heavy" offensive zone pressure from the Islanders.

"I thought Freddy made some real good saves tonight and the better your goalie plays, the more you settle down and the more you get dialed in," the coach said.

Toronto made it 3-0 midway through the second when Kadri fired a puck on goal from along the wall as he rushed down the left side. Greiss made a stick save, but shuffled it right to Nylander crashing the net. The puck bounced off the right knee of the 20-year-old Swede for his 15th goal this season, tied with Mitch Marner for second among Maple Leafs rookies behind Matthews.

From there, Andersen took over.

With the Maple Leafs short-handed, the 27-year-old shut down John Tavares and then Bailey moments later. After a 3-on-1 for Toronto came up empty, Andersen denied Chimera on a breakaway.

But the officials ruled Hunwick impeded Chimera's progress on the play. The veteran forward was awarded a penalty shot and he beat Andersen high to the blocker side to cut Toronto's lead to 3-1.

Andersen has scuffled in the new year, entering the night with an .893 save percentage in 16 starts since Jan. 1. He had been sitting on 99 wins for almost two weeks, his last victory coming on Feb. 4.

"I mean, it's nice, but it's more important the 26 we have as a team this year," he said.

Matthews pushed Toronto's lead back to three early in the third period, flipping a backhand rebound past Greiss on the power play. The rookie sensation another goal a short while later, depositing Connor Brown's feed from behind the net.

"Obviously, you know he's a real good player, but the NHL is a really good league and it's hard to score goals in this league," Babcock said of Matthews, who has four multigoal games this season. "He plays on a good line and he's an elite player and very determined with an elite, heavy shot and he goes to the traffic areas and that's where you score."

NOTES: The 19-year-old Matthews leads all rookies in goals and is three behind Sidney Crosby for the overall NHL lead. Matthews became the first Maple Leafs rookie since Daniel Marois in 1988-89 to reach 27 goals and is seven shy of equaling Wendel Clark's franchise rookie record. ... Babcock said Leivo earned another look on Wednesday night at Columbus - even with Soshnikov ready to return.

'It's about time': Etan Patz's dad finds justice in verdict

By COLLEEN LONG and JENNIFER PELTZ
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Nearly four decades after 6-year-old Etan Patz vanished on the way to his school bus stop, a former convenience store clerk was convicted Tuesday of murder in a case that influenced American parenting and law enforcement.

The jury verdict against Pedro Hernandez gave Etan's relatives a resolution they had sought since May 1979 and gave prosecutors a conviction that eluded them when a 2015 jury deadlocked.

"The Patz family has waited a long time, but we've finally found some measure of justice for our wonderful little boy, Etan," said his father, Stanley Patz, choking up.

"I am truly relieved, and I'll tell you, it's about time. It's about time."

Hernandez, who once worked in a shop in Etan's neighborhood, had confessed, but his lawyers said his admissions were the false imaginings of a man whose mind blurred the boundary between reality and illusion.

On the earlier jury, the lone holdout against conviction cited the mental health issue as a major reason for his stance.

This time, the jury concluded Hernandez had a psychiatric disorder but hadn't imagined killing the boy, one member said.

"We decided he has an illness ... but that didn't make him delusional," said Michael Castellon, a construction company attorney. "We think that he could tell right from wrong. He could tell fantasy from reality."

Hernandez, 56, showed no reaction on hearing the verdict, but his lawyers said he planned to appeal. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 28.

"In the end, we don't believe this will resolve the story of what happened to Etan back in 1979," said lawyer Harvey Fishbein.

Etan became one of the first missing children ever pictured on milk cartons, and the anniversary of his disappearance has been designated National Missing Children's Day.

His parents lent their voices to a campaign to make missing children a national cause, and it fueled laws that established a national hotline and made it easier for law enforcement agencies to share information about vanished youngsters.

And his disappearance helped tilt parenting to more protectiveness in a nation where many families had felt comfortable letting children play and roam alone. As Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi put it when the trial opened last fall, Etan "will forever symbolize the loss of that innocence."

The long-awaited verdict had one prosecutor quoting the Bible — "justice shall you pursue," Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann said — and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. declaring that Hernandez' guilt had been "affirmed beyond all lasting doubt."

The verdict even spurred tears from some pro-conviction jurors from the first trial, who had attended the second one, though the lone holdout, Adam Sirois, said via text message that he hadn't changed his mind in feeling there wasn't enough evidence to convict.

Still, the Patz family — which focused for years on another suspect before Hernandez's 2012 arrest — may never know exactly what became of the boy.

Hernandez told authorities he'd left Etan's body, still living, in a box with some trash, but no trace of him has been found since he vanished in a then-edgy but neighborly part of lower Manhattan.

The decades-long investigation took investigators as far as Israel, but Hernandez wasn't a suspect until renewed news coverage of the case prompted a brother-in-law to tell police that Hernandez in 2012 had revealed to a prayer group decades earlier that he'd killed a child in New York.

Authorities would later learn that he'd made similar, if not entirely consistent, remarks to a friend and his ex-wife years earlier.

After police came to Hernandez's home in Maple Shade, New Jersey, he confessed, saying he'd offered Etan a soda to get him into the store basement and choked him.

"Something just took over me," Hernandez said in one of a series of recorded confessions to police and prosecutors. He said he'd wanted to tell someone, "but I didn't know how to do it. I felt so sorry."

Prosecutors cast his confession as the chillingly believable words of a man unburdening himself, and they argued it was buttressed by the less specific admissions he'd made earlier.

Defense lawyers and doctors portrayed Hernandez as man with psychological problems and intellectual limitations that made him imagine he'd killed Etan.

His daughter testified that he talked about seeing visions of angels and demons and once watered a dead tree branch, believing it would grow. Prosecutors suggested Hernandez faked or exaggerated his symptoms.

Defense lawyers also pointed to a different man who was long the prime suspect — a convicted Pennsylvania child molester who made incriminating remarks about Etan's case in the 1990s and who had dated a woman acquainted with the Patzes. The man was never charged and denies killing Etan.

"The defense threw a lot of theories out there," Castellon said, but they weren't convincing, though jurors deliberated for nine days.

Ultimately, members of the jury that voted to convict felt Hernandez's remarks to the prayer group were both reliable and corroborated by multiple people, Castellon said.

He said jurors also looked closely at the other suspect but concluded he was toying with authorities by making chilling statements but not confessing.

Deliberations were difficult, but "we had constructive conversations, based in logic, that were analytical and creative and adaptive, and compassionate," foreman Thomas Hoscheid said.

"And, ultimately, kind of heartbreaking."

NYC officials: 1 person dies, 2 ill from rat-related disease

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York City health department says one person has died and two others have become severely ill after they contracted a rare disease transmitted by rats.

The three cases occurred in the last two months in a Bronx neighborhood. City officials say it's the first time a cluster of cases has been identified.

The disease is called leptospirosis (lehp-toh-spuhr-ROH'-sihs).

Infections commonly occur through exposure to rat urine. The disease is rarely spread from person to person. It can be treated with antibiotics.

The city says it's reducing the rat population in the area and educating residents about the disease.

The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/2lOMiA9 ) says that from 2006 to 2016, 26 cases were reported in the city; the Bronx had the highest number with eight.

Conley, Gasol help Grizzlies send Nets to 13th straight loss

By JEFFREY BERNSTEIN
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- Mike Conley scored 32 points, Marc Gasol had 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the hapless Brooklyn Nets 112-103 on Monday night.

Brandan Wright added 17 points and Vince Carter had 14 as the Grizzlies won for the fourth time in their last five games.

Brook Lopez and Spencer Dinwiddie each had 17 points as the Nets lost their 13th straight overall and 15th straight at home to set a new franchise record for futility.

The Nets trimmed the Grizzlies' 16-point lead to 99-92 on Rondae Hollis-Jefferson's dunk with 3:55 left. However, Conley scored Memphis' next nine points to clinch the victory.

The Nets led 19-17 before the Grizzlies closed the first quarter on a 10-0 run and took the lead for good. They scored seven straight in the second quarter and took a 52-42 lead into halftime.

The Nets got within five early in the third quarter but the Grizzlies soon pushed it to 70-55 on JaMychal Green's jumper with 5:58 left in the period. They led 79-72 after three and Brooklyn got no closer than five again.

Green finished with 10 points.

Sean Kilpatrick (15), Trevor Booker (13), Hollis-Jefferson (13), and Bojan Bogdanovic (11) also scored in double figures for Brooklyn.

TIP-INS:

Grizzlies: Starter Tony Allen did not play because of a "planned recovery day," according to the team. James Ennis III started in his place. . Memphis is 16-13 on the road this season, but only 5-7 against Eastern Conference teams. . The Grizzlies own the third-longest active streak among all NBA teams with six consecutive winning seasons and playoff appearances. Only the Spurs (20 straight) and Hawks (9) have longer streaks.

Nets: Brooklyn has lost to the Grizzlies five straight times. The Nets have not won a game in the series since March 5, 2014, a 103-94 victory in Brooklyn. . Dinwiddie's 17 points were a season high.

MEMPHIS MOTIVATION

Prior to the game, Grizzlies coach David Fizdale wanted to make sure his team was ready to play against the worst team in the NBA. "I talk a lot about empathizing with a team that's struggling," he said. "I try to present scenarios like we're making this a Game 6 on the road that extends our season. I want our guys thinking like that."

BARCLAYS BUMMER

The Nets' 15 straight home losses are a new franchise record. The New Jersey Nets lost 14 straight at home during the 2009-10 season. Brooklyn has not won at home since Dec. 26 against the Hornets (120-118).

GRIZZLIED VETERAN

Carter, who turned 40 on Jan. 26, is the oldest player in the NBA. Now in his third year with the Grizzlies, Carter was a member of the New Jersey Nets for five seasons (2004-09). He is still third on the franchise's scoring list (8,834 points), right behind Lopez (9,928).

UP NEXT

Grizzlies: Memphis hosts New Orleans on Wednesday. The Grizzlies have won both games against the Pelicans so far this season, with each extending to overtime.

Nets: Brooklyn hosts Milwaukee on Wednesday. The teams have already met three times this season, with the Bucks winning each one. Milwaukee has won the last seven meetings in the series. The Nets' last victory came on March 20, 2015, a 129-127 triple-overtime affair.
