The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired infielder Todd Frazier andright-handed pitchers David Robertson andTommy Kahnle from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for right-handed pitcher Tyler Clippard, left-handed pitcher Ian Clarkin and outfielders Blake Rutherford and Tito Polo.
Frazier, 31, hit .207/.328/.432 (58-for-280) with 41R, 15 doubles, 16HR, 44RBI and 48BB in 81 games for the White Sox in 2017, including 67 starts at third base, 12 at designated hitter and one at first base. In 2016, the Point Pleasant, N.J., native set career highs with 40HR and 98RBI in 158 games with the White Sox and was named the team's Heart and Hustle Award winner.
A product of Rutgers University, Frazier is a two-time National League All-Star, earning the nod in 2014-15 with the Cincinnati Reds. In 2015, he won the Home Run Derby at Great American Ball Park. His 158HR lead all Major League third basemen since the start of 2012.
Originally selected by Cincinnati in the first round (34th overall) of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Frazier was acquired by the White Sox from the Reds in a seven-player, three-team trade on December 16, 2015. The right-handed batter has appeared in 872 games across seven Major League seasons between Cincinnati (2011-15) and Chicago-AL (2016-17). In 2012, he finished third in National League "Rookie of the Year" voting. Frazier owns a career .247 batting average (777-for-3,151) with 435R, 161 doubles, 11 triples, 164HR, 466RBI, 301BB and 62SB.
Frazier is eligible for free agency at the end of the 2017 season.
Robertson, 32, is 4-2 with a 2.70 ERA (33.1IP, 10ER) in 31 relief appearances with the White Sox this season, converting 13-of-14 save chances.
The right-hander was originally selected by the Yankees in the 17th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, making his Major League debut with the club in 2008. Over seven seasons with the Yankees (2008-14), he went 25-19 with 47 saves (in 62 opportunities), a 2.81 ERA (393.1IP, 123ER) and 524K in 402 relief appearances. He currently ranks eighth on the franchise's all-time list in saves and ninth in games pitched. Robertson served as the team's closer in his final season with the club, converting 39-of-44 saves.
In his career, Robertson is 40-29 with 131 saves (in 161 chances), a 2.95 ERA (552.1IP, 181ER) and 732K in 555 relief appearances. Among active pitchers with at least 500.0IP, his 11.93 K/9.0IP ranks first, while his 0.77 HR/9.0IP (47HR, 552.1IP) ratio is ninth-lowest among relievers (min. 500.0IP).
Robertson is in the third year of a four-year contract he signed with the White Sox on December 10, 2014.
Kahnle (pronounced KAYN-lee), 27, went 1-3 with a 2.50 ERA (36.0IP, 10ER) and 60K, while walking just seven batters over 37 relief appearances with the White Sox. His 15.00 K/9.0IP ratio this season ranks fourth among Major League relievers, as he has struck out 42.6 percent of his 141 batters faced. Since May 6, he has struck out at least one batter in each of his 26 appearances, the second-longest such streak by any pitcher this season behind only Milwaukee's Corey Knebel's active 45-game stretch. He is one of just three pitchers this season with at least 60K and fewer than 10BB, joining Los Angeles-NL's Kenley Jansen and Boston's Craig Kimbrel.
Over parts of four Major League seasons with Colorado (2014-15) and Chicago-AL (2016-17), the right-hander has gone 3-6 with a 3.70 ERA (165.1IP, 68ER) in 156 relief appearances. Since August 7, 2016, he ranks fourth among AL pitchers with a 1.84 ERA (53.2IP, 11ER) and sixth with a .185 opponents' batting average (min. 40.0IP).
The Latham, N.Y., native was originally selected by the Yankees in the fifth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. He was selected by Colorado in the 2013 Rule 5 Draft and traded to Chicago-AL on November 24, 2015, in exchange for RHP Yency Almonte.
Clippard, 32, was 1-5 with a 4.95 ERA (36.1IP, 20ER) in 40 relief appearances with the Yankees this season. He was originally selected by the Yankees in the ninth round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft and was reacquired by the club from Arizona on July 31, 2016, in exchange for RHP Vicente Campos. Over 11 Major League seasons, the Lexington, Ky., native has pitched for the Yankees (2007, '16-17), Washington (2008-14), Oakland (2015), New York-NL (2015) and Arizona (2016).
Clarkin, 22, was 4-4 with a 2.61 ERA (72.1IP, 21ER) in 14 games (13 starts) with Single-A Tampa in 2017. The left-hander went 14-18 with a 3.20 ERA (250.1IP, 89ER) in 52 games (50 starts) over four minor league seasons with the Yankees (2013-14, '16-17). The San Diego, Calif., native was selected by the Yankees in the first round (33rd overall) of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.
Polo, 22, was hitting a combined .307/.369/.455 (89-for-290) with 56R, 14 doubles, 7 triples, 5HR, 37RBI, 27SB and 22BB in 74 games between Single-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton this season and was named to the Florida State League All-Star Game. Prior to the season, the outfielder played for Colombia in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. A native of San Andres Islas, Colombia, Polo was acquired by the Yankees on August 30, 2016, as a player to be named later along with LHP Stephen Tarpley in the August 1, 2016, trade that sent RHP Iván Nova to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was originally signed by the Pirates as a non-drafted free agent on March 12, 2012.
Rutherford, 20, was hitting .281/.342/.391 (77-for-274) with 41R, 20 doubles, 2 triples, 2HR, 30RBI, 9SB and 25BB in 71 games with Single-A Charleston. A 2017 South Atlantic League All-Star, the outfielder hit .302 (117-for-388) with 57R, 28 doubles, 6 triples, 5HR, 42RBI, 9SB and 38BB in 104 games over two minor league seasons with the Yankees. Born in Morristown, N.J., he was selected by the Yankees with the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Chaminade College Prep in West Hills, Calif.
