Woman charged with DUI after hitting pedestrian

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey woman who hit a woman with her car has been charged with drunken driving.

Police say 24-year-old Samaa Dessouki, of Jersey City, struck Aida Cumpa while she was walking on the sidewalk with her mother and husband on Booraem Avenue in Jersey City early Sunday.

Cumpa had to be freed by emergency officials after being pinned between Dessouki's SUV and a fence.

Cumpa was transported to Jersey City Medical Center with a fractured right leg.

Police arrested and charged Dessouki with assault by auto, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated. Dessouki told police she was cut off by a car while turning onto Booraem Ave., leading her to hit two cars and Cumpa.

It wasn't immediately known if Dessouki had an attorney to comment on her behalf.
