Video via ABC7NY.

MASPETH, Queens – Three people were killed and 11 injured Wednesday when an apparent high-speed, two-car crash triggered another collision of four more vehicles on the Long Island Expressway in Queens just before 4:30am.

At least four more vehicles were involved in a secondary accident.

Eleven other people were injured and are expected to survive. They were rushed to Elmhurst Hospital and Queens Hospital Center in stable condition.

The victims were in a yellow taxi cab, a grey SUV, a black sedan and a silver car. A large yellow dump truck was also involved in the second crash.

Mets defeat Marlins 7-4

NEW YORK (AP) — Curtis Granderson came off the bench and homered twice, powering the Mets to the victory.

Asdrubal Cabrera extended his recent tear at the plate, hitting a two-run homer in his return to the lineup after missing one start due to a sore left knee. Rookie right-hander Seth Lugo (2-2) pitched six effective innings and Jeurys Familia earned his major league-leading 43rd save as the Mets won for the eighth time in 10 games.

By taking the first two games of the four-game series, New York (68-64) moved ahead of slumping Miami for second place in the NL East.

Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer for the Marlins, who have dropped four straight and six of eight overall. Tom Koehler (9-10) got the loss.

Yankees weather rain, Royals comeback for 5-4 win in 10

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jacoby Ellsbury drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in the 10th inning, and the New York Yankees hung tough after blowing a four-run lead for a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Dellin Betances (3-4) tossed two scoreless innings of relief for New York before Ben Heller loaded the bases with one out in the 10th. Chasen Shreve entered the game and calmly struck out Kendrys Morales and got Salvador Perez to fly out, picking up his first career major league save.

Brian McCann and Chase Headley started the Yankees' go-ahead rally with singles off Joakim Soria (4-6), who recovered to strike out Aaron Judge and Tyler Austin. But after Soria walked Brett Gardner to load the bases, Ellsbury lined a single off Soria's leg for his fourth hit of the game.

Judge hit a two-run homer for the Yankees, while Ellsbury finished with two RBIs.

Morales went deep for the Royals to spur their comeback, then provided the tying sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. Jarrod Dyson and Lorenzo Cain also drove in runs for Kansas City.

The Yankees built a 4-0 lead off Edinson Volquez by the third inning, only to watch it slowly slip away around a 59-minute rain delay that saturated the soggy turf at Kauffman Stadium.

In fact, just about all that could slow down the Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka was the rain.

The right-hander mowed through the first eight batters he faced, extending the streak of 14 2/3 scoreless innings he had twirled in his last two starts. Tanaka didn't allow a hit until a single by Raul Mondesi, who later scored on Dyson's triple off the top of the wall.

Tanaka's only other mistake came on Morales' homer in the fourth inning.

The rain began falling and the tarp came out after the fifth inning, and the delay was long enough to end Tanaka's night. He allowed two runs and four hits while striking out four without a walk.

The Royals got within 4-3 in the sixth inning when Cain slapped an RBI double off Adam Warren, then they coaxed across the tying run in the eighth against Tyler Clippard and Betances.

Clippard walked Cain to start the inning. Cain promptly stole second off Betances, and the throw from catcher Gary Sanchez squirted into the outfield, allowing Cain to reach third. He trotted home to knot the game 4-all when Morales lofted a sacrifice fly to center.

ROSTER MOVES

The Yankees optioned RHP Kirby Yates to rookie-level Pulaski and recalled Shreve from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Shreve joined the Yankees for the fourth time this season.

TRADE COMPLETE

The Pirates sent OF Tito Polo and LHP Stephen Tarpley to the Yankees to complete their Aug. 1 deal for RHP Ivan Nova. Polo hit .289 with 16 homers between Class-A Bradenton and West Virginia, and Tarpley was 6-4 in 20 starts with Bradenton.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Yankees: 1B Mark Teixeira sat again with pain in his neck, manager Joe Girardi said. "From a health standpoint I have to watch him closely, but he's feeling better today than he was yesterday."

Royals: RHP Wade Davis was due to make a rehab appearance at Triple-A Omaha after Monday night's game was rained out. Davis has been sidelined with a flexor strain.

UP NEXT

RHP Luis Cessa, the second Yankees pitcher since 2004 to win his first two career starts, returns to the mound for New York. RHP Ian Kennedy tries for his fourth straight win for the Royals.

Royals defeat Yankees 8-5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dillon Gee kept the Royals' momentum going with six sharp innings, Alcides Escobar hit a three-run homer and Kansas City beat the New York Yankees.

Gee (6-7) allowed only four hits and a run in the latest impressive start by the Royals' staff, helping the reigning World Series champions win for the 18th time in 22 games.

Lorenzo Cain, Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon drove in runs off Michael Pineda (6-11) during a five-hit salvo in the first inning. Pineda then retired 15 straight before getting into a two-on, no-outs jam in the seventh that led to Escobar's homer off reliever Blake Parker.

Starlin Castro drove in two runs for the Yankees, the second in a four-run eighth inning that forced Kansas City manager Ned Yost to summon fill-in closer Kelvin Herrera.

Mets beat Marlins 2-1

NEW YORK (AP) — Yoenis Cespedes homered with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the New York Mets a 2-1 victory over the Miami Marlins on Monday night.

Jose Reyes dashed home to score the tying run in the eighth on a dangerous collision at the plate. Two innings later, Cespedes, who sat out Sunday's loss to Philadelphia after his nagging right quadriceps flared up, launched a no-doubt drive to left-center on a 1-1 pitch from Nick Wittgren (4-3).

The Mets pulled even with Miami for second place in the NL East. With its seventh victory in nine games, New York remained 2 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the league's second wild card.

Rookie left-hander Josh Smoker (1-0) struck out two in a perfect inning for his first major league win.

Phillies beat Mets 5-1

NEW YORK (AP) — A.J. Ellis had a big hit in his Philadelphia debut, breaking a seventh-inning tie with a two-run double that sent the Phillies past New York.

Vince Velasquez and four relievers quieted a streaking Mets lineup that was minus ailing sluggers Yoenis Cespedes (quad) and Neil Walker (back).

New York also lost shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera in the first inning. He exited with soreness in his left knee, a problem area that has sidelined him twice before this season.

David Hernandez (3-3) pitched a scoreless inning for the win. Robert Gsellman (1-1) lost in his first start in the majors.

Orioles beat Yankees 5-0

NEW YORK (AP) — Kevin Gausman tamed the torrid Yankees hitters, Mark Trumbo lined his major league-leading 40th home run and Steve Pearce also connected to help Baltimore avert a sweep.

The Orioles got battered in the first two games, outscored 27-9. Baltimore bounced back in the matchup between AL East contenders, halting its three-game skid and ending New York's winning string at four.

Gausman (6-10) threw seven innings, giving up seven hits while striking out nine and walking none. He posted a rare road win after going 0-16 in his previous 25 starts away from Camden Yards.

Yankees rookie sensation Gary Sanchez doubled and singled. He had homered in three straight games and is hitting .404 in 22 games this year. CC Sabathia (8-11) was the loser.

NJ Transit officer saves life of man who jumped on tracks

New Jersey Transit police officer Victor Ortiz saved the life of a man who jumped onto a train track on Friday morning saying he wanted to die and didn't want to be arrested.

The 16-year veteran got a call at Secaucus Junction about the incident, and pulled the man away from the tracks from the oncoming train, and then arrested him.

"He said 'I just want to die, I just want to die, I just want to die', I said no, I'm not going to let you die," said Ortizin an interview with ABC7NY.

Ortiz usually works the night shift and goes home at 7 a.m., but because of staffing issues he stayed late that day.

Police say the 11-year-old was watching practice sessions at about 3:45 p.m. with her family inside Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing for Arthur Ashe Kids' Day, when an unknown man approached her from behind.

According to police, the man grabbed her wrist and told her that if she did not go with him, he was going to hurt her. The girl then reportedly pulled her arm free from the man, and kicked him.

Police say several hundred college-age people had attended a student-organized event in Willard Straight Hall and that several fights took place outside after the event ended.

The Ithaca Police Department is leading the investigation.

Fitz, Jets starters sluggish, score in 21-20 loss to Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a touchdown pass to Eric Decker and the New York Jets' defense stifled Eli Manning and the New York Giants' starters in a 21-20 preseason loss Saturday night.

Both teams' first-string offenses did very little in the last regular-season tuneup for most starters, but Fitzpatrick connected with Decker for a 22-yard score three plays after Darrelle Revis intercepted Manning on a pass intended for Odell Beckham Jr. in Giants territory in the second quarter.

Fitzpatrick finished 9 of 16 for 76 yards with the score and lost a fumble in the red zone before being replaced by Geno Smith just before halftime.

Manning was 10 of 15 for 65 yards and an interception while playing one series into the third quarter. The Giants' starters managed just 61 total yards against Todd Bowles' defense.

The Giants (1-2) didn't get past the 50-yard line until a facemask penalty on Brandon Bostick on a punt return put them at the Jets 47 with 2:36 left in the third quarter.

Backup Ryan Nassib took advantage two plays later, connecting with Tavarres King on a 27-yard touchdown that cut the Jets' lead to 10-7. It was the Giants' first score since late in the first quarter of their preseason opener.

Backup defensive end Kerry Wynn returned an interception 73 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a pass from Bryce Petty that was tipped by J.T. Thomas III.

Jets second-rounder Christian Hackenberg began trending on Twitter after he went 4 of 6 for 79 yards on his first NFL drive, capping it with a 10-yard TD throw to Robby Anderson. He was also intercepted by Andrew Adams with 2:34 left, leading to King's go-ahead touchdown catch for the Giants. Hackenberg finished 6 of 16 for 105 yards for the Jets (1-2).

Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz played for the first time since 2014, catching a pass for 4 yards. Cruz was limited to six games two years ago because of a knee injury and then missed all of last season with a calf injury. The 29-year-old Cruz was sidelined the first two preseason games this summer with a groin injury.

Jets running back Matt Forte (hamstring) and defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (leg) made their preseason debuts. Forte, signed in March after eight seasons in Chicago, had 28 yards on 10 carries and added two catches for 9 yards.

SITTING OUT

Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall was a surprise scratch with what Bowles said after the game was "sore hips." The coach said the decision was made Friday and he didn't seem too concerned about Marshall's status, saying he could have played if it had been a regular-season game. Anderson started in Marshall's place and had four catches for 65 yards and a TD.

ROOKIE WATCH

Giants: First-round CB Eli Apple had a solid showing against the Jets' starters, covering Decker at times. He didn't play last week because of a knee injury in the preseason opener.

Jets: Undrafted K Ross Martin, competing with veteran Nick Folk, kicked a 55-yard field goal in the third quarter and added a 29-yarder in the fourth.

QB COMPARISON

Giants: Nassib was 6 of 19 for 69 yards, including his two TD tosses to King.

Jets: Smith went 3 of 5 for 14 yards on two drives. Petty, trying to secure a roster spot, was 5 of 10 for 59 yards before being replaced by Hackenberg on the drive following his interception.

POSITION BATTLES

Giants: King made a case to be the last receiver on the roster, finishing with two catches for 38 yards and his two scores.

Jets: Ben Ijalana and Brent Qvale took turns at RT with the starters, and one could start if Breno Giacomini (back) isn't ready for the regular season.

INJURY UPDATE:

Giants: LB Jonathan Casillas (ribs), CB Leon Hall (concussion), rookie LB B.J. Goodson (concussion) and FB Nikita Whitlock (foot) left with injuries.

Jets: LB David Harris left late in the first half with an injured right shoulder, which was in a sling after the game. Bowles said the veteran will have additional tests Sunday.

QUOTABLE:

Giants: "Well, we have to get better moving the ball, getting first downs and just staying out of the negative plays," Manning said of the starting offense. "There is definitely some room for improvement, but we will go on from here."

Jets: "I think we feel pretty good right now," said Fitzpatrick, 16 of 29 for 183 yards and a TD in the preseason. "I don't know if those three games are a good indication of where we are."

Mets lose to Cardinals 8-1

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter, Randal Grichuk and Stephen Piscotty homered off New York starter Jacob deGrom to power St. Louis.

Carpenter set the tone, hitting a leadoff home run in the first inning. The Cardinals went on to win for the seventh time in nine games.

Piscotty and Yadier Molina each had three of the Cardinals' season high-tying 19 hits.

Carlos Martinez (12-7) gave up one run and four hits over eight innings. He also got two hits himself.

Roughed up for the second straight start, deGrom (7-7) allowed five runs on 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He was tagged for a career-worst eight runs and 13 hits in his previous outing against San Francisco.

Yankees beat Mariners 5-0

SEATTLE (AP) — Rookie Gary Sanchez kept up his torrid stretch with his seventh home run in the past nine games, and Masahiro Tanaka won his fourth straight start in New York's victory over Seattle.

Tanaka (11-4) threw seven shutout innings and got the better of the Mariners and former Japan League teammate Hisashi Iwakuma (14-9).

The Yankees won their third straight road series. They took two of three from the Mariners, one of the teams they're chasing in the AL wild-card race.

Sanchez homered into the second deck in left field in the first inning on the first pitch from Iwakuma, his ninth home run in 18 games since joining the Yankees lineup Aug. 3.

Sanchez added a double and his intentional walk in the seventh inning led to Mark Teixeira's RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

Yankees beat Mariners 5-1

SEATTLE (AP) — Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run homer and CC Sabathia pitched seven innings to win for the third time in two months, leading New York over Mariners.

Sabathia (8-10) was 2-6 with a 6.78 ERA in his previous 11 starts. He gave up a run in the third inning on a triple by Leonys Martin and single by Ketel Marte, but allowed just one single and his lone walk over the next four innings.

Tommy Layne pitched a perfect eighth and Dellin Betances worked around a two-out single to finish the four-hitter.

Taijuan Walker (4-8), recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Tacoma, allowed four runs — three earned — and six hits in 5 2/3 innings, with three walks and five strikeouts.

Mets beat Cardinals 7-4

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Wilmer Flores and Justin Ruggiano homered, Jose Reyes reached four base times and scored three runs, and Asdrubal Cabrera had three hits, drove in a run and scored once.

The offense helped Robert Gsellman (1-0) get the decision in his major league debut. Gsellman, pressed into action after starter Jonathon Niese left with an injury in the first inning, pitched 3 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

Jeurys Familia earned his 42nd save, one shy of the Mets' season record set by Familia last year and Armando Benitez in 2001.

Cardinals lefty Jaime Garcia (10-9) gave up a season-high six runs at home, in just four innings.

Giants beat Mets 10-7

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Madison Bumgarner hit a go-ahead two-run homer off Jacob deGrom in the fourth inning — moments after giving up a grand slam — and San Francisco came back from four runs down.

Bumgarner, who narrowly missed a home run in his first at-bat, hit a 2-2 pitch into the stands in left field to cap a five-run inning when the Giants batted around. It was Bumgarner's third home run this season and the 14th of his career.

That helped overcome a shaky outing by San Francisco's four-time All-Star. Bumgarner (12-7) allowed four runs over five innings and struck out six.

New York had taken a 4-0 lead in the fourth on Justin Ruggiano's second career grand slam in his first game back off the disabled list.

Diamondbacks beat Mets 13-5

PHOENIX (AP) — Yasmany Tomas and Rickie Weeks Jr. each homered twice and drove in a combined 11 runs, leading Arizona past New York.

Tomas set a career high for RBIs in a game with six and logged his major league-leading seventh multi-homer game of the season. Weeks tied a career high with five RBIs and had his first multi-homer game in more than three years, the eighth of his career.

Tomas has eight home runs in 10 games and has hit safely in 16 of his last 18 starts, with 23 RBIs over that span. His solo shot in the fourth gave Arizona a 3-1 lead, right after Weeks' first home run, then he added a two-run triple in the seventh and three-run homer in the eighth.

Zack Godley (4-2) earned the win with 7 1/3 innings of five-hit ball. Jon Niese (8-7) took the loss.

Yankees lose to Blue Jays 7-4

NEW YORK (AP) — J.A. Happ won his 11th consecutive decision to become the first 17-game winner, Melvin Upton Jr. hit a three-run homer and Toronto beat New York.

Darwin Barney had an early two-run double, and Russell Martin added three hits, including an RBI single off CC Sabathia. The AL East-leading Blue Jays took two of three in the series, delighting a vocal contingent of Toronto fans at Yankee Stadium.

Happ (17-3) pitched into the eighth extended the longest active winning streak in the big leagues. He struck out nine, walked one and yielded solo homers to Gary Sanchez, Starlin Castro and Chase Headley.

Signed as a free agent in the offseason to a $36 million, three-year contract, Happ has won five straight starts. The 33-year-old lefty is 3-0 in four outings against the Yankees this year.

Happ was lifted after Headley's infield single with one out in the eighth. Joaquin Benoit gave up an RBI single to rookie Aaron Judge that made it 7-4, and Roberto Osuna struck out Didi Gregorius on a 97 mph fastball with two on to end the inning. Osuna got four straight outs for his 27th save.

Mets defeat Diamondbacks 7-5

PHOENIX (AP) — Noah Syndergaard earned his first victory in seven starts, helping himself with a two-run homer, and New York ended a string of four consecutive losses to Arizona in the past week.

Jeurys Familia pitched a perfect ninth for his major league-leading 40th save.

Syndergaard (10-7), the losing pitcher in Arizona's 9-0 rout of the Mets in New York last week, went 5 2/3 innings, giving up four runs, two earned, and seven hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. He hadn't won since July 3.

Braden Shipley (2-2) gave up seven runs, six earned, and 10 hits in 5-plus innings.

Yankees beaten by Blue Jays 12-6

NEW YORK (AP) — Russell Martin homered twice, including a go-ahead shot in an eight-run eighth inning, and Troy Tulowitzki had four hits as Toronto erased a six-run deficit to beat New York.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a tying homer and drove home three runs in the eighth as Toronto took advantage of a complete meltdown by New York's bullpen. Tulowitzki also went deep to help the Blue Jays pull off their biggest comeback of the season and move back atop the AL East, just ahead of Baltimore and Boston.

Impressive rookie Gary Sanchez homered twice for New York, including a titanic, three-run drive deep into the rarely reached second deck in left field. It was the first time both starting catchers had multiple home runs in an American League game since at least 1913, the Yankees said.

Scott Feldman (6-4) replaced ineffective starter Marco Estrada after a rain delay and struck out five in three innings of one-run relief.

Adam Warren (1-1) began the eighth for New York and gave up four runs in 1/3 of an inning.

Yankees defeat Blue Jays 1-0

NEW YORK (AP) - Chad Green struck out 11 in six dominant innings, Aaron Judge delivered again with an RBI double and Dellin Betances escaped a big ninth-inning jam, leading New York over Toronto.

Betances got major league RBI leader Edwin Encarnacion to ground into a game-ending, around-the-horn double play with runners at the corners.

The Yankees won for the fifth time in six games, taking the first 1-0 decision between the teams since 2005. They dropped Toronto percentage points out of first place in the AL East and pulled within 5 1/2 games of new division leader Baltimore.

Promoted earlier in the day from Triple-A for his fifth stint of the season with the Yankees, Green (2-2) was in complete control. He gave up two hits, walked none and outpitched R.A. Dickey (8-13).

Tyler Clippard, Adam Warren and Betances combined for scoreless relief. Betances held on for his fifth save as the Yankees stopped a five-game losing streak to Toronto.

Mets lose to Diamondbacks 10-6

PHOENIX (AP) - Welington Castillo, just back from a six-day leave due to complications with the birth of his son, matched his career high of four hits to lead Arizona over New York.

Castillo doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice for the last-place Diamondbacks, who swept three games from the defending NL champions last week in New York.

Bartolo Colon (10-7) drew the first walk of his 19-year major league career but lasted just four innings.

Robbie Ray (5-11) allowed two runs in five innings for his first victory in five starts. One of his two walks went to the 43-year-old Colon on a 3-2 pitch. It came in Colon's 282nd career plate appearance. According to ESPN Stats & Info, no other player in major league history had that many plate appearances without walking.

Paul Goldschmidt had three hits, including a triple and a double. He scored three times. Yasmany Tomas hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

Nassib stumbles in start for Manning, Dolphins win 27-10

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Ryan Nassib had a big chance to show everyone what he could do as New York Giants quarterback with Eli Manning getting the night off.

He blew it after a good first quarter.

Nassib was consistent in leading the Giants on a game-opening touchdown drive and cashing in on an interception in staking New York to a 10-point lead.

But his three second-quarter turnovers led to 17 points in the Miami Dolphins' 27-10 victory in the preseason opener Friday night.

The start of the game was delayed 51 minutes by weather, pushing back the coaching debuts of Ben McAdoo of the Giants and Adam Gase of the Dolphins.

Neither coach had a lot to be happy about in a game marked by turnovers and penalties.

Miami had nine penalties for 61 yards and one turnover. New York had four turnovers and seven penalties for 56 yards.

A 3-yard run by Rashad Jennings and a 20-yard field goal by Josh Brown following an interception by Jonathan Casillas staked New York to its first-quarter lead.

Nassib turned over the ball on three consecutive second-quarter possessions to give the Dolphins the lead.

Bobby McCain's interception led to a 49-yard field goal by Andrew Franks. A fumble and return by Spencer Paysinger set up Damien Williams' 5-yard TD run, and an interception by A.J. Hendy led to a 51-yard TD pass from Matt Moore to Matt Hazel.

Marshall Koehn added a 28-yard field goal in the third quarter and Zac Dysert capped the scoring with a fourth-down, 16-yard pass to Thomas Duarte, a score that followed a fumble by third-string quarterback Logan Thomas.

QB COMPARISON

Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill finished 2 of 4 for 8 yards. Moore was 10 of 14 for 122 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Doughty, the seventh-round pick from Western Kentucky, finished up and looked good, hitting 7 of 9 for 66 yards.

Giants: Nassib finished 7 of 15 for 75 yards with the three turnovers in a performance that will not inspire confidence that he would be able to step in and replace Manning. After holding the ball for more than 18 minutes in the first half, the offense was limited to nine minutes of possession in the second.

ROOKIE WATCH

Dolphins: Dolphins first-round pick Laremy Tunsil didn't start, but played most of the game at left guard and held his own. Leonte Carroo, the former Rutgers star who was Miami's third-round pick, had three catches for 18 yards. Sixth-round pick Jakeem Grant had four catches for 68 yards.

Giants: First-round pick cornerback Eli Apple played well until straining his lower leg. Second-round pick Sterling Shepard had one diving catch for 24 yards, setting up the Giants' touchdown.

POSITION BATTLES

Dolphins: Franks woke up the Dolphins' offense with a 49-yard field goal in the second quarter. Koehn showed a good leg on kickoffs.

Giants: Big games for the rookies. Apple, Shepard and S Darian Thompson are all going to contribute, along with MLB B.J. Goodson, who had seven tackles, including two for losses.

NOT SO STEAMY

The late start and the pre-game rain dropped the temperature to 76 degrees at kickoff. The rain convinced McAdoo to sit Odell Beckham Jr.

INJURY UPDATE

Dolphins: Grant (rib), S Shamiel Gary (neck), DE Chris McClain (elbow) and DE Julius Warmsley (concussion) did not return.

Giants: Apple and Shepard were hurt in the first half and did not return. WR Geremy Davis pulled a hamstring in the second half. Veteran Victor Cruz was already out with a groin injury.

QUOTABLE

Dolphins: "The defense got their hands on the ball multiple times and turned the game around for us," Tannehill said. "The offense, we didn't get much going in the first half, first or second group. But they started getting their hands on the ball and flipping the momentum and really got the game going for us."

Giants: "Ball security is the No. 1 priority and I didn't do a good job of it," said Nassib, who has thrown 10 NFL regular-season passes in his first three seasons. "We have a lot to work on, but the turnovers are unacceptable. You never go into a game expecting to throw interceptions, obviously when you fail it's disappointing and frustrating, but we have to bounce back and get back out there."

Padres beat Mets 8-6

NEW YORK (AP) — Rookie Ryan Schimpf hit a grand slam and added a two-run shot in San Diego's victory over New York.

Jabari Blash and Christian Bethancourt also homered early to help the Padres hand the Mets their fourth straight loss and sixth in seven games. The defending NL champions (57-58) fell below .500 for the first time since April 17.

One day after getting swept at home by last-place Arizona, the Mets again failed to look like legitimate wild-card contenders. San Diego, which has alternated wins and losses since July 26, jumped out to a 5-0 six batters into the game — including Schimpf's grand slam. Logan Verrett (3-8) was the loser.

A-Rod doubles, plays third in Yankees finale

NEW YORK (AP) — His pregame tribute ended by a storm, Alex Rodriguez soaked in repeated cheers during his final game in pinstripes, getting one more hit for the New York Yankees and returning to third base one last time.

On a night filled with nostalgia as the Yankees and Rodriguez turn to uncertain futures, baseball's most notorious star of the last two decades drove a 96 mph fastball from Tampa Bay's Chris Archer into the right-center field gap in the first inning of New York's 6-3 victory Friday.

And with the sellout crowd of 46,459 chanting "We want A-Rod!" the 41-year-old designated hitter trotted to third base for the first time in 15 months at the start of the ninth inning as the organist played "Thanks for Memory." He was replaced after a leadoff strikeout, hugging his teammates. A-Rod ran back on the field for more hugs after the final out, grabbing a handful of dirt from the infield.

Rodriguez grounded out, struck out and bounced out again on the first pitch in his last at-bat. The 1-for-4 night left him with a .200 average, nine homers and 31 RBIs in his 12th and final Yankees season.

Rodriguez has 696 home runs, fourth on the career list behind Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714). Rodriguez said last Sunday he had accepted an offer to play one final home game and then become a team adviser through 2017, tasked with mentoring young players.

Starlin Castro had four RBIs for the Yankees, hitting a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the sixth off Archer (6-16) that gave CC Sabathia (7-9) his second win since mid-June. Dellin Betances got the save.

Bortles, Jags start fast; backups lead Jets to 17-1

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Blake Bortles led the Jacksonville Jaguars on two scoring drives, the second capped by Chris Ivory's 1-yard run against his former team, in a 17-13 loss to the New York Jets in the preseason opener for both teams Thursday night.

Bortles finished 6 of 7 for 105 yards in his two series, Allen Robinson caught three passes for 80 yards and the Jaguars (0-1) took a quick 10-0 lead with their starters in the game. Ivory, who signed with Jacksonville as a free agent after three seasons in New York, capped the second drive with his TD.

Jacksonville has been focusing on starting faster this season after scoring just 35 points in the first quarter last season, which ranked the Jaguars 31st in the NFL.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, who re-signed with the Jets just before training camp after a long contract stalemate, also went two series with the starters and was 3 of 4 for 72 yards. Bilal Powell capped the second drive, which included catches of 26 and 43 yards by Quincy Enunwa, with a 4-yard touchdown run.

Geno Smith replaced Fitzpatrick with 9:49 left in the second half on the one-year anniversary of the punch that changed the Jets' season — and possibly Smith's career. The former starting quarterback had his jaw broken by a punch from then-teammate IK Enemkpali in the locker room, sidelining Smith and pushing Fitzpatrick into the job. Fitzpatrick went on to set a franchise record with 31 touchdown passes while leading the Jets to a 10-6 mark and within a victory of the playoffs.

Smith finished 8 of 14 for 79 yards, including a 17-yard TD pass to seventh-rounder Charone Peake that gave the Jets a 14-13 lead with 22 seconds left in the opening half. He was also booed a few times by the MetLife Stadium crowd when he went three-and-out in his first two possessions.

Several starters for both teams sat out, including the Jets' Darrelle Revis, Muhammad Wilkerson, Matt Forte and Steve McLendon; and the Jaguars' Jalen Ramsey, Tashaun Gipson, Brandon Linder and Kelvin Beachum.

QB COMPARISON

Jaguars: Backup Chad Henne was 8 of 9 for 94 yards in four possessions to finish the second half.

Jets: Bryce Petty, a fourth-rounder last year, is competing with rookie Christian Hackenberg, a second-rounder this year, for the No. 3 job and finished 7 of 14 for 93 yards. Hackenberg didn't play.

ROOKIE WATCH

Jaguars: Ramsey was held out as a precaution. The fifth overall draft pick had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee in May, but hasn't missed any time during training camp.

Jets: First-round pick Darron Lee got his first sack, taking Henne down in the second quarter. "He flashed quite a bit," coach Todd Bowles said. ... Undrafted free agent S Doug Middleton sealed the win with an interception off a tipped pass in the end zone by Brandon Allen in the closing seconds.

POSITION BATTLES

Jaguars: WR Tony Washington, vying for the fifth receiver spot, left briefly before being cleared after going through the concussion protocol. He had a 36-yard catch in the second quarter. ... RB Denard Robinson, trying to win a spot behind Ivory and T.J. Yeldon, had seven carries for 23 yards and a 4-yard catch. Jonas Gray, Robinson's primary competition, did not travel with an injury.

Jets: Rookie K Ross Martin, trying to unseat Nick Folk, missed a 39-yard field goal and a 54-yarder after making a 23-yarder. Folk made both of his extra-point attempts. ... Veteran Jeremy Ross and undrafted rookie Jalin Marshall had big kickoff returns. Ross had a 51-yarder in the first quarter, while Marshall had an 84-yarder near the end of the first half that set up a touchdown.

STEAMY

The temperature at kickoff was a toasty 94 degrees, with the heat index making it feel like 98.

INJURY UPDATE

Jaguars: CB Aaron Colvin sprained his right ankle in the third quarter and did not return. S James Sample left in the second half with a right arm stinger.

Jets: RB Dominique Williams suffered a concussion during a 10-yard run to open the third quarter.

QUOTABLE

Jaguars: "Yeah, I thought it was good," Bortles said of the fast start. "We want to come out and be sharp with our operation in and out of the huddle, no mental errors, lining up correctly, shifts and motions, and all that. And, obviously take care of the ball. I thought, for the most part, it was good."

Jets: "I had a lot of fun," said a smiling Lee, who had four total tackles, two for loss, and a sack in his NFL debut after being the 20th overall pick out of Ohio State.

A-Rod drives in winning run as Yankees beat Red Sox 4-2

BOSTON (AP) — Alex Rodriguez drove in a run with a bases-loaded dribbler, capping a three-run rally in the eighth inning that lifted the New York Yankees over the Red Sox 4-2 on Thursday night and sent the booed designated hitter out of Boston with one last victory.

Rodriguez is set to play his final game for the Yankees on Friday night at home against Tampa Bay. The 41-year-old designated hitter will then be released and become an adviser and instructor for the club.

Rodriguez was 0 for 4 and loudly jeered throughout the game that turned in the Yankees' favor on a crucial fielding mistake that allowed them to overcome a 2-1 deficit.

Rodriguez lined out, popped out and struck out before his tapper in front of the plate in the eighth allowed Brett Gardner to score from third and put New York up 4-2. In 1994, Rodriguez was a teenager with Seattle when he got an infield single at Fenway Park for his first major league hit.

Dellin Betances earned his third save, striking out Dustin Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts with runners at the corners to end it. Luis Cessa (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings. Brad Ziegler (0-3) got the loss.

Mets lose to Diamondbacks 9-0

NEW YORK (AP) — Last-place Arizona rattled New York's Noah Syndergaard with four more stolen bases, then broke it open in a six-run sixth inning that included Chris Owings' bases-loaded triple.

Braden Shipley (2-1) pitched three-hit ball over seven innings in his fourth big league start to help the Diamondbacks sweep the three-game series. Zack Godley and Dominic Leone finished the five-hitter.

After brushing aside Syndergaard (9-7), the Diamondbacks began their sixth-inning burst against Jon Niese with Tuffy Gosewisch's leadoff homer. Owings had his second straight three-hit game, finishing with a single, double and triple.

Arizona had 13 stolen bases in the series — one shy of Baltimore's season total, three more than the Diamondbacks' previous mark for any series and the most in a three-game series against the Mets. Paul Goldschmidt had two of them, and Socrates Brito and Shipley one each.

Runners have swiped 36 bases in 40 tries against Syndergaard this year and are 51 for 56 against him in his career, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Diamondbacks beat Mets 3-2 in 12 innings

NEW YORK (AP) — Oscar Hernandez hit his first major league homer in the 12th inning to lift Arizona Diamondbacks past New York.

Hernandez was recalled from Double-A Mobile after Arizona placed catcher Welington Castillo on the paternity list Tuesday. Playing his first game this season, Hernandez drove a sinker from Jerry Blevins (4-2) down the left-field line.

Randall Delgado (3-1) pitched two perfect innings for the victory.

The Mets' Kelly Johnson forced extra innings with a two-run homer in the ninth off Jake Barrett. The blown save was Barrett's fourth in eight chances.

Yankees beat Red Sox 9-4

BOSTON (AP) — Benched from the starting lineup once again as his finale approaches, Alex Rodriguez pinch hit and flied out in the seventh inning of the New York Yankees' 9-4 comeback win against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.

New York said Sunday that Rodriguez, a 41-year-old designated hitter with 696 home runs, will be released following Friday's homestand opener against Tampa Bay.

Red Sox star David Ortiz limped off in the ninth inning after fouling a pitch off his right shin.

Chants of 'We Want A-Rod"! echoed around the park at the start of the seventh. He was greeted by loud boos when he stepped out of the dugout to face Matt Barnes. They were louder when he was announced and again when he trotted back to the dugout after his flyout to right field.

Rodriguez has just one start and eight at-bats in 17 games since July 22 as New York traded veterans and turned toward a youth movement. He hadn't appeared in a game since Aug. 2.

Rookie Gary Sanchez had four hits, including his first major league home run. Didi Gregorius also homered for New York.

Tyler Clippard (1-0) pitched one inning for his first victory with the Yankees since being acquired from Arizona last week. Fernando Abad (1-6) was the loser.

Yankees can't beat Red Sox, lose 5-3

BOSTON (AP) - Rick Porcello continued to dominate at Fenway Park with eight solid innings, Matt Barnes cleaned up a mess created by closer Craig Kimbrel and Boston held on to beat New York.

Kimbrel walked in a run with the bases loaded in the ninth before handing off to Barnes, who struck out Mark Teixeira for his first save.

Porcello (15-3) allowed two runs and struck out six. He improved to 11-0 in 12 starts at home this season.

Luis Severino (1-7) allowed five runs and seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. It was his first start since being demoted to the minors in May.

Mets lose to Diamondbacks 5-3

NEW YORK (AP) - Zack Greinke won in his return from a six-week stay on the disabled list, Michael Bourn hit a go-ahead triple in the seventh inning and Arizona rallied past New York.

Paul Goldschmidt and late substitute Brandon Drury each homered for Arizona. The Diamondbacks also stole five bases, with a double steal setting up Bourn's two-run liner that erased a 3-2 deficit.

Neil Walker hit his 20th home run for the wild card-contending Mets, who missed a chance to post back-to-back wins for the first time in more than a month.

Greinke (11-3) earned his eighth straight victory. The Arizona ace had been out since June 28, when he strained his left side while batting.

Greinke gave up three runs in six innings. It was the first time he faced the Mets since losing the decisive Game 5 of the NL Division Series last October with the Dodgers.

Jake Barrett closed for his fourth save.

Steven Matz was in position for just his second win in 13 starts before Mets reliever Hansel Robles (5-4) got tagged.

Yankees beat Indians 3-2

NEW YORK (AP) — Masahiro Tanaka rebounded from two rocky outings, Didi Gregorius homered and New York held off Cleveland after announcing that Alex Rodriguez will play his final game in pinstripes this week.

Mark Teixeira, two days since disclosing his own plans to retire at the end of the season, hit an RBI double and dove toward first base to complete a crucial play on defense. Dellin Betances got four outs for his second save as New York took two of three from the AL Central leaders.

Cleveland, which remained two games ahead of Detroit, has dropped five of seven. Cleanup hitter Mike Napoli was ejected by plate umpire Lance Barrett after getting called out on strikes in the eighth inning.

Hit hard by the Mets in a Subway Series loss last week, Tanaka (8-4) was lifted with a 3-0 lead following Rajai Davis' leadoff double in the seventh. Carlos Carrasco (7-6) also bounced back from a poor outing and turned in seven solid innings for the Indians, who tried to rally late.

About two hours before the first pitch, the 41-year-old Rodriguez and the rebuilding Yankees announced the slumping slugger will play Friday night against Tampa Bay at Yankee Stadium and then be released. After that, he plans to become a special adviser and instructor with the team next year.

Indians beat Yankees 5-2

NEW YORK (AP) — Corey Kluber put Cleveland's rotation back on track, Andrew Miller earned a save against the team that traded him last weekend and the Indians beat New York.

Mike Napoli, Jason Kipnis and Rajai Davis homered to help the AL Central leaders recover from an early two-run deficit. Kluber (11-8) struck out eight in eight innings of five-hit ball, beating CC Sabathia (6-9) in a matchup of pitchers who won the AL Cy Young Award with Cleveland.

Miller closed with a one-hit ninth for his first save with Cleveland. The lanky left-hander, acquired Sunday in a blockbuster trade, entered to a warm ovation at Yankee Stadium and fanned two batters following a leadoff single. Miller's first nine saves this year came with the Yankees.

Tigers beat Mets 6-5

DETROIT (AP) — J.D. Martinez threw Jay Bruce out at the plate on the final play of the game, enabling Detroit to hold off New York.

New York trailed 6-1 before rallying with two runs each in the fifth and seventh. With men on first and second and two out in the ninth, Travis d'Arnaud poked a single into right field. Martinez charged the ball, and his one-hop throw home was in time to get Bruce.

Miguel Cabrera drove in three runs for the Tigers. They have won 10 of 11 and trail AL Central-leading Cleveland by two games.

Detroit's Matt Boyd (3-2) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings, and New York's Logan Verrett (3-7) yielded six runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. Martinez's throw gave Francisco Rodriguez his 32nd save.

Mets lose to Tigers 4-3

DETROIT (AP) — Victor Martinez homered and Detroit ace Justin Verlander limited New York to four hits in six innings to help the Tigers to their ninth victory in their last 10 games.

Verlander (12-6) allowed only two runs and struck out nine, but the Mets ran his pitch count up to 103 to force him out of the game. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 31st save.

James Loney drove in a ninth-inning run with a groundout, and Rodriguez retired Kelly Johnson to end the game. Johnson homered in the fourth for the Mets. They have lost four straight.

Noah Syndergaard (9-6) also ran into pitch-count trouble, needing 112 to get through his six innings.

Yankees beat Indians 13-7

NEW YORK (AP) — Starlin Castro hit a third-inning grand slam off Josh Tomlin that gave the Yankees a six-run lead, Mark Teixeira got two hits after tearfully announcing this will be his final big league season and New York beat the Cleveland Indians 13-7 on Friday night.

Jacoby Ellsbury had a four-hit game, and Michael Pineda (6-10) won for the third time in four outings following a six-start winless streak, allowing four runs and six hits in six-plus innings.

New York's Gary Sanchez made his first league start behind the plate and threw out Jason Kipnis and Mike Napoli trying to steal second base in the first two innings. The rookie, called up from the minors on Wednesday, doubled in the fifth for his first big league RBI and walked with the bases loaded in the sixth.

The Yankees had 16 hits, including at least one by every starter, and the Indians failed to retire New York in order in any inning. Cleveland lost for the fourth time in five games, and its AL Central lead over second-place Detroit was cut to two games

Slowed by injuries, Teixeira said he will retire after this season at age 36. He doubled in the first inning and legged out a single in the third on a ball stopped by Kipnis, the second baseman, in short right field. At .202, Teixeira's average reached .200 for the first time since before play on May 20.

Tomlin (11-4) allowed a season-high seven earned runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings and is 3-3 in 10 outings since an 8-1 start.

Mets defeat Yankees 4-1

NEW YORK (AP) — Jay Bruce launched a three-run homer for his first hit since being traded, Bartolo Colon took a shutout into the seventh inning and the New York Mets beat the Yankees 4-1 on Thursday night for a split of the Subway Series.

After each team won once at Citi Field earlier this week, the Mets took the wrapup of the two-game set at Yankee Stadium.

Bruce had been 0 for 10 since being acquired from Cincinnati on Monday before his drive into the Yankees' bullpen in right-center field made it 4-0 in the fifth inning against Nathan Eovaldi (9-8).

Kelly Johnson also led off with a homer in the inning.

Bruce's 26th homer gave him the NL RBIs lead with 83, ended an 0-for-19 rut overall and made him 5-for-56 against the Yankees. He cracked a smile on the way back to the dugout, where Colon and his new teammates greeted him with hearty high-fives.

Colon (10-6) gave up six hits in 6 2/3 innings in earning his 228th victory, most among active pitchers. The 43-year-old righty, who spent 2011 with the Yankees, became the first pitcher to win a Subway Series game for each New York team, the Elias Sports Bureau said.

Jeurys Familia worked around a pair of one-out singles for his 38th save in 40 chances.

Yankees defeat Mets 9-5

NEW YORK (AP) — Mark Teixeira hit a tiebreaking, three-run drive off Steven Matz in the second inning for his first home run against a left-hander in more than a year, then got hit by a pitch that sparked a bench-clearing dustup in the Yankees' Subway Series victory.

Chad Green and Matz (8-8) both struggled at the start, and Luis Severino (1-6) came out of the bullpen with 4 1/3 innings of one-hit relief. Another of the Yankees' Kiddie Korps, 23-year-old catcher Gary Sanchez, was called up before the game and got his first big league hit.

In a season-long slump, Teixeira came to the plate in the second with the score 3-all. Following two-out singles by Jacoby Ellsbury and Rob Refsnyder, the switch-hitter lofted the ball over the right-field scoreboard and into the first row of seats at Yankee Stadium for his 10th home run this season and first batting right-handed since July 31 last year against Carlos Rodon of the Chicago White Sox.

When Teixeira batted in the fifth, Matz's first pitch hit him below the left knee. Teixeira got up, started yelling and was walled off by catcher Rene Rivera. Players from both teams came onto the field, but there were no scuffles. Then, during a three-run seventh that opened a 9-4 lead, the Mets had repeated mound meetings with reliever Hansel Robles when Teixeira was on second base, apparently thinking he was trying to steal signs. When Robles walked toward the dugout, he appeared to mutter at Teixeira, who pointed to the side of his helmet.

Mets beat Yankees 7-1

NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom pitched seven scoreless innings, Alejandro De Aza and Travis d'Arnaud homered off Masahiro Tanaka and New York Mets' offense woke up in a Subway Series win.

Jay Bruce went 0 for 4 and took a pair of called third strikes in his Mets debut, but his new team scored its most runs since July 7 and won for the second time in seven games.

DeGrom (7-5) escaped a two-out jam in the first by striking out Didi Gregorius, then got out of runners-at-the-corners trouble in the second by fanning Tanaka.

Tanaka (7-4) lasted 6 1/3 innings and allowed eight hits and seven earned runs.

Yankees beat Mets 6-5 in extras

NEW YORK (AP) — Starlin Castro hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and the Yankees hardly resembled a team resigned to fading away after selling off their stars at the trade deadline, rallying past the Mets in their Subway Series opener.

Didi Gregorius hit a tying single with two outs in the eighth and new closer Dellin Betances worked out of a major jam for his first save this season. Hours after trading slugger Carlos Beltran and pitcher Ivan Nova before the non-waiver deadline, the Yankees snapped a four-game slide.

Wilmer Flores and rookie Matt Reynolds homered for the skidding Mets, who lost their fifth in six games as fans in the sellout crowd of 42,125 traded chants throughout the night following a hectic afternoon at Citi Field.

Castro's RBI came off Seth Lugo (0-1). Adam Warren (1-0) got his first win since returning to the Yankees.

Earlier in the day, the defending NL champions completed deals to land All-Star outfielder Jay Bruce and reacquire lefty Jon Niese.

Mets acquire outfielder Jay Bruce from Cincinnati

The New York Mets today announced that the club has acquired three-time All-Star outfielder Jay Bruce from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for infielder Dilson Herrera and minor league lefthanded pitcher Max Wotell.

Bruce, 29, was named an All-Star for a third time this season and is batting .265 (98-370) with 22 doubles, six triples, 25 home runs, 80 RBI and a .559 slugging percentage in 97 games. His 80 RBI lead the National League (fourth in the major leagues) while his 25 home runs are tied for fourth-most in the NL. He's one of three players in the majors this season to have at least 22 doubles, 25 home runs and 80 RBI (the other two are Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion and Boston's David Ortiz). Additionally, Bruce is batting .360 (32-89) with eight home runs and 52 RBI with runners in scoring position.

His All-Star selection earlier this year was his first since being named a back-to-back NL All-Star in 2011 and 2012. The Beaumont, TX native is also a two-time Silver Slugger award winner (2012 and 2013).

Last season, Bruce batted .226 (131-580) with 35 doubles, four triples, 26 home runs and 87 RBI in 157 games. He was one of nine major leaguers with at least 35 doubles, 26 home runs and 87 RBI. He finished the season with the ninth-most extra-base hits in the National League. His 45 RBI following the All-Star break were eighth-most in the NL. In the outfield, Bruce recorded 11 outfield assists, third-most for a National League outfielder.

Since 2011, Bruce has 165 homers, 10th-most for any major league player while his 538 RBI in that time are seventh-most in the majors since 2011. Since his debut in 2008, Bruce has 233 career home runs, fifth-most in the major leagues for a lefthanded hitter while his 718 career RBI in that time are the sixth-most for a lefthanded hitter.

In 1,220 career games across nine major league seasons, Bruce has batted .249 (1,116-4,481) with 238 doubles, 27 triples, 233 home runs and 718 RBI.

Herrera, 22, has played in 86 games for Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League this season and batted .276 (99-359) with 24 doubles, 13 home runs and 55 RBI. Last season, Herrera played in 31 games for the Mets, batting .211 (19-90) with three doubles, one triple, three home runs and six RBI. In 49 career major league games, all with the Mets, Herrera batted .215 (32-149) with three doubles, two triples, six home runs and 17 RBI.

Wotell, 20, was the Mets' third-round selection in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft. In six starts for Kingsport (R) of the Appalachian League this season, Wotell is 3-1 with a 3.94 ERA (13 earned runs/29.2 innings) and 31 strikeouts. In two minor league seasons, Wotell is 3-2 with a 3.57 ERA (16 earned runs/40.1 innings) in 15 games (six starts).

Yankees trade Ivan Nova to Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired right-handed pitcher Ivan Nova from the New York Yankees in exchange for two players to be named. The announcement was made by Pirates Executive Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

The 29-year-old Nova went 7-6 with one save and a 4.90 ERA (97.1ip/53er) in 21 games (15 starts) with the Yankees this season. He began the year pitching in relief before joining the starting rotation on May 9. In his 15 starts with the Yankees this season, Nova went 6-5 with a 4.86 ERA.

Nova made his Major League debut with the Yankees in 2010 and has gone 53-39 in 131 big league games (118 starts). He won a career-high 16 games in 2011 and posted career highs in starts (28) and innings pitched (170.1) while going 12-8 in 2012.

Yankees trade Carlos Beltran to Rangers

The New York Yankees today announced that the club have acquired minor league right-handed pitchers Dillon Tate, Nick Green, and Erik Swanson and cash considerations in a trade with the Texas Rangers in exchange for outfielder Carlos Beltran.

Beltran, 39, has batted .304 with 22 home runs, 22 doubles, and 64 RBI in 99 games with the Yankees this season, his third year with New York-AL. The 2016 All-Star ranks among American League leaders in batting average (9th), slugging percentage (4th, .546), at-bats per home run (9th, 16.3) and at-bats per RBI (10th, 5.6). Since the beginning of June, the switch-hitter has compiled a .343/.389/.562/.950 slash line with 10 home runs and 33 RBI in 49 games, ranking among the A.L.'s top 10 in each of the four percentage categories in that span. He has seen action in right field (58 games) and as designated hitter (34 games) with the Yankees, and is also 1-for-7 with a walk as a pinch-hitter.

Beltran has already reached his 12th career season with 20-or-more home runs, tied for 4th-most among active players. His 414 career home runs rank 6th among active players and are 4th-most all-time by a switch-hitter, trailing Mickey Mantle (536), Eddie Murray (504), and Chipper Jones (468). He was selected as an All-Star for a 9th time in 2016, and has won a Rawlings Gold Glove Award on 3 occasions and was twice on the Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Team. He was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1999 with Kansas City. He is one of 5 players in major league history with at least 7 different seasons of 20+ home runs and 20+ stolen bases.

Over 52 career postseason games, Beltran has batted .332 (61-184) with 16 home runs and 40 RBI. He ranks 9th in major league history in postseason home runs and his 45 runs in the playoff are 11th all-time. He has played 42 games at Globe Life Park in Arlington, batting .300 (51-170) with 9 home runs, 40 RBI, and a .902 OPS figure. With the addition of Beltran, the Rangers now have 2 of the top 6 on the active home run list (Adrian Beltre is 5th with 429 HR).

Tate has gone 3-3 with a 5.12 ERA (37 ER/65.0 IP) over 17 games/16 starts with Low-A Hickory. He was selected by the Rangers in the first round (4th overall) of the 2015 June draft and is in his second professional season. Green is 2-2 with a 4.98 ERA (19 ER/34.1 IP) in 7 starts with short-season Spokane, his third professional season. Swanson has gone 6-4 with a 3.43 ERA (31 ER/81.1 IP) and one save over 19 games/15 starts for Low-A Hickory in his third pro campaign.

Mets defeat Rockies 6-4

NEW YORK (AP) — Neil Walker hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh off Boone Logan (1-1) following James Loney's 10-pitch walk, helping New York stop a four-game losing streak that matched its season high.

Walker also had an RBI triple, but New York sustained another costly injury when shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera strained the patellar tendon in his left knee — the same injury that sidelined him for a little more than two weeks during spring training this year.

Carlos Gonzalez hit a tying RBI double in the fifth and a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh off winner Jerry Blevins (4-1). Jeurys Familia struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 37th save.

Yankees can't beat Rays, lose 5-3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Rookie left-hander Blake Snell (3-4) struck out nine over 5 1/3 innings, Luke Maile had a key two-run single against Michael Pineda (5-10) and Tampa Bay completed a three-game sweep.

After winning eight of 10, New York lost its fourth straight game and fell to .500 at 52-52. Before the game, the Yankees traded reliever Andrew Miller to Cleveland for touted outfielder Clint Frazier and three others. New York had sent closer Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs on Monday.

Alex Colome got three outs for his 25th save.
